Chapter 4 - The First Domino Falls

The offices of Vance Development were in a state of absolute chaos. Papers were scattered across the desks, phones were ringing off the hook, and the air was thick with the scent of cheap coffee and sweat.

Julian sat at his desk, his tie loosened and his sleeves rolled up. He had spent the last forty-eight hours trying to reach his bankers, but every call was forwarded to voicemail.

"Julian, we have a problem," his CFO, Marcus, said as he burst into the office without knocking. "The construction workers at the Tribeca site have gone on strike. They haven't been paid their weekly wages. The union is threatening to sue."

"I told you to use the funds from the Aegis Capital loan!" Julian yelled, slamming his hand on the desk. "We signed the contract yesterday!"

"The funds were wired, but they were immediately frozen by the court," Marcus said, his voice trembling. "An emergency injunction was filed this morning. It claims the Greenwich estate, which we used as collateral, is subject to an active division of assets in a divorce proceeding."

Julian froze. "Divorce? Claire? She actually filed?"

"Not only did she file, Julian, but her lawyers have also filed a motion to freeze all joint accounts and any corporate entities where she might have a beneficial interest," Marcus explained, wiping sweat from his forehead. "And because Veritas—the holding company that owns sixty-two percent of our shares—is also tied up in this, the bank has temporarily locked our operational capital to prevent 'asset dissipation'."

"How did she do this?" Julian whispered, his face turning grey. "She’s a nobody! She has no money, no lawyers! Who is representing her?"

"The firm is Hayes & Associates," Marcus said. "They are one of the most expensive matrimonial and corporate firms in the country. They don't take clients who can't pay a fifty-thousand-dollar retainer upfront."

Julian’s mind raced. Fifty thousand dollars? Claire didn't even have fifty dollars of her own allowance. He had made sure of it. He had monitored her bank statements every month, giving her just enough for groceries and basic necessities.

Suddenly, the door to his office swung open. Eleanor Vance walked in, her face twisted in a mixture of rage and panic.

"Julian! What is the meaning of this?" she demanded, throwing a legal document onto his desk. "I was just served at my tennis club! A process server handed this to me in front of all my friends!"

Julian picked up the document. His eyes widened as he read the bold letters at the top: NOTICE OF EVICTION AND SEIZURE OF PROPERTY.

"This is for the Greenwich estate," Julian said, his voice barely a whisper. "But... we own the house."

"Apparently, we don't," Eleanor hissed, her voice shaking with humiliation. "The document says the house is registered under 'Veritas Real Estate Holding'. And Veritas has terminated our lease due to non-payment of rent for the last three months!"

"Rent? We don't pay rent!" Julian cried.

"We did, Julian. Through a corporate transfer from Vance Development to Veritas as a tax write-off," Marcus chimed in quietly. "But since the corporate accounts are frozen, the rent transfer failed this month. And because the contract had a zero-tolerance grace period, they have the right to evict us immediately."

"This is a setup," Julian muttered, the realization finally hitting him like a physical blow. "This isn't Claire. This is someone else. Someone is trying to destroy us."

"It’s her," Eleanor snarled. "That ungrateful, pathetic little orphan. She must have found some wealthy benefactor. I told you we should have thrown her out years ago! She’s doing this to hurt us because of her little accident!"

"Mother, she lost the baby!" Julian suddenly shouted, his voice cracking with emotion. "And I... I can't..."

He stopped himself, unable to voice his sterility in front of Marcus. But Eleanor knew. She had seen the medical report Julian had left on his nightstand.

"Don't you dare raise your voice at me, Julian!" Eleanor snapped. "That baby was probably not even yours anyway, considering her background. We need to find her. We need to make her drop these lawsuits. If we don't, we will lose everything by the end of the week."

"I don't know where she is," Julian said, burying his face in his hands. "She vanished. She’s gone."

Just then, Julian’s personal phone rang. It was an unknown number. He answered it on the first ring, desperation making his voice shake.

"Claire? Is that you?"

There was a brief silence on the line, followed by a soft, melodic laugh that made Julian’s blood run cold. It was indeed Claire’s voice, but it sounded different. Gone was the timid, hesitant tone he was used to. This voice was cool, precise, and dripping with authority.

"Hello, Julian," I said. "I hear you're having some financial difficulties."

"Claire! Where the hell are you?" Julian roared, standing up from his chair. "What are you doing? Why are you freezing my accounts? Have you lost your mind?"

"I’ve actually never been saner, Julian," I replied smoothly. "I’m just taking back what belongs to me."

"What belongs to you? You brought nothing into this marriage! You were a charity case! My mother and I gave you everything!"

"You gave me a fractured skull, a broken rib, and an empty womb," I said, my voice dropping to a dangerous, icy whisper. "And now, I am going to take your empire, your home, and your pride. Tell Eleanor I hope she enjoys the charity gala. Oh, wait... she won't be attending. Her invitation has been revoked."

"Claire, listen to me—"

May you like

"Goodbye, Julian," I said. "I'll see you in court. Or rather, my lawyers will."

I hung up the phone before he could reply, a deep sense of peace washing over me. The game had officially begun.
