Francine and I celebrated the anniversary of our escape with a quiet dinner at a restaurant overlooking the river. We clinked our wine glasses together, toasting to survival, resilience, and the power of a mother's fierce love.

"You know," Francine said, swirling her wine, "looking back at where you were last year... you're a completely different person."

"I didn't change," I smiled, looking out at the sparkling city lights. "I just remembered who I was before I let everyone else tell me how to live."
