Chapter 5 - A New Beginning

The ink on the custody agreement was barely dry when September arrived, bringing with it the crisp, golden energy of early autumn. With the legal battle behind us, Meadow and I focused entirely on rebuilding our lives.
Meadow’s hair had grown back in a soft, thick crop of curls that framed her face like a halo. Whenever she touched it, she no longer flinched; instead, she would giggle and style it in front of the mirror, completely reclaiming the joy of childhood that Judith had tried to clip away.
We spent our weekends exploring the city—visiting the botanical gardens, baking messy batches of chocolate chip cookies in our bright yellow kitchen, and reading piles of storybooks before bedtime. The apartment no longer felt temporary; it felt like home.
Dustin tried to reach out a few times, sending polite, stilted emails asking how Meadow was doing. I kept my replies brief and strictly business-related, coordinated through a co-parenting app monitored by the court. He attended his counseling sessions, though the reports indicated he still struggled to acknowledge his mother's toxic influence. As for Judith, she remained entirely out of our lives, her attempts to contact Meadow blocked by both legal decree and my unyielding vigilance.
One Saturday morning, as I poured pancakes onto breakfast plates, Meadow ran into the kitchen wearing a superhero cape she had crafted out of an old blue towel. She spun around, her golden curls bouncing with every movement.
"Mommy, look! I can fly!" she announced, striking a dramatic pose.
I laughed, setting the plate down and scooping her up into a tight hug. "I can see that, superhero. Nothing can stop you now."
Meadow rested her chin on my shoulder, wrapping her arms around my neck. "Mommy?"
"Yes, sweetie?"

"We're going to be okay, right? Just the two of us?"
I kissed the top of her head, feeling the warmth of her hair against my lips. "More than okay, baby. We are going to be wonderful."
