Chapter 6 - A New Spring

Six months later, the world outside was bursting with the vibrant green life of a brand-new spring.

The harsh chill of winter had melted away, replaced by warm sunshine, blooming cherry blossoms, and a renewed sense of vibrant energy inside our home. St. Jude’s Hospital had become a place we visited only for routine monthly checkups rather than emergency stays. Both children were thriving in ways that felt nothing short of miraculous.

Sofía’s latest blood panel had come back with two words every cancer family dreams of hearing: Complete Remission.

Her bone marrow biopsy confirmed that Mateo’s donated cells had completely taken over, establishing a healthy, cancer-free immune system in her body. Better yet, her hair had grown back in thick, soft, glorious waves that shimmered just like her brother's in the sunlight. The blue star beanies had finally been packed away in a keepsake box in the back of her closet, no longer needed.

And Mateo? Mateo’s hair had grown back into a magnificent halo of bright, golden curls that bounced with every step he took.

Whenever older ladies at the local grocery store stopped us in the aisle to admire his radiant ringlets and gush, "Oh, what a beautiful little angel," Mateo would no longer look down with confusion or shame. Instead, he would puff out his chest proudly, touch his curls, and declare with absolute confidence, "I'm not a girl! I'm a superhero, and I saved my sister's life!"

We would all laugh, exchange warm smiles, and continue walking down the aisle, completely unbothered by the opinions of strangers or toxic relatives.
