Chapter 8 - The Front Porch Standoff

We had been home for a week when the doorbell rang through my phone’s camera app.
It was my mother. She was standing on the porch, holding a teddy bear that was nearly as big as she was. She looked older, smaller, and desperately sad.
Ryan looked at me, holding Lily to his chest. “Do you want me to tell her to leave?”
I looked at the screen. “No. I need to do this.”
I stepped out onto the porch, pulling the door firmly shut behind me so she couldn't peer inside. The late summer air was warm.
“You didn't call,” she said, her voice cracking.
“I told you I wouldn't.”
“She’s my granddaughter.”
“She’s my daughter first,” I replied, keeping my voice steady. “Mom, you ruined my announcement. You violated my privacy with the ultrasound. You hijacked my gender reveal. You broke into my house. You tried to crash my delivery. You don't get to demand access to my child when you have zero respect for me as her mother.”
Tears spilled down her cheeks. “I just love you both so much. I just wanted to be part of it.”
“You were part of it!” I said, my voice finally raising. “You were invited to all of it! But being a part of it wasn't enough for you. You had to own it. You had to be the center of attention. You stole my firsts, Mom. And I will never, ever let you steal Lily's.”
She looked down at the teddy bear, defeated. “What do I do? How do I fix this?”

“You get help,” I said flatly. “You go to therapy. You figure out why your excitement is more important than my boundaries. Until a professional tells me you’ve made real progress, you don't get to play grandma.”
I turned and walked back inside, locking the deadbolt with a loud, definitive click.
