Chapter 6 - The Hospital Trap

My water broke at 2:00 AM on a rainy Thursday.
The drive to the hospital was a blur of contractions, deep breathing, and Ryan’s steady, reassuring voice. We had pre-registered at a hospital a town over—specifically to avoid anyone “accidentally” dropping by.
When we checked in, Ryan handed the charge nurse a printed sheet of paper with our birth plan and a bolded section at the top.

The nurse, a seasoned veteran named Sarah, gave us a knowing nod. “Honey, we deal with overbearing families every day. You are a ghost. Nobody gets through those doors unless you say so.”
I labored for twelve hours. It was grueling, beautiful, and raw. But halfway through, while I was resting between contractions with an epidural, Ryan’s phone buzzed. It was a text from my dad.
“Your mom found out from a nurse friend which hospital you’re at. She’s in the lobby. I couldn’t stop her. I’m sorry.”
My heart rate spiked on the monitor. Ryan squeezed my hand. “I’m handling it. Focus on our daughter.”

He walked out to the nurse's station. I later learned that when my mother demanded to be let back to the delivery wing, Nurse Sarah had calmly informed hospital security. My mother was escorted back to her car, crying about how she was being robbed of her right as a grandmother.
But I didn't see any of it. My room remained quiet. Safe. Ours.
