Chapter 6 - The Paper War

By 2:00 PM that afternoon, Richard Hale was officially out on bail.
The battle lines were drawn instantly, moving from the physical violence of the kitchen to the ruthless arena of the legal system. As a senior partner at one of Columbus’s most prominent corporate law firms, Richard had endless money and a network of powerful friends. Within twenty-four hours of his release, he launched an all-out legal assault designed to starve us into submission.
The first blow landed on Thursday morning.
I was sitting at my desk at the architectural firm where I worked as a senior project manager, reviewing blue prints, when my boss, Marcus, knocked on my glass office door. He looked uncomfortable, holding a thick yellow envelope.
“Claire,” Marcus said, closing the door behind him. “I just received a formal notice from our corporate legal department.”
I felt a cold pit form in my stomach. “What is it?”
“Hale, Vance & Sterling—Richard’s firm—just filed a conflict-of-interest claim against us,” Marcus said, shaking his head in disbelief. “They represent two of our biggest commercial developers. They claim that your continued employment here creates a severe ethical conflict, and they’ve threatened to pull millions of dollars in developer contracts from our firm unless you are placed on immediate, unpaid administrative leave pending the outcome of your stepfather’s criminal trial.”
My blood boiled. “Marcus, that’s weaponized retaliation! He’s using his firm to get me fired so I can’t financially support my sister!”
“I know, Claire,” Marcus said sympathetically. “I know it’s garbage. But the managing partners are panicked. They can’t afford to lose those developer contracts. My hands are tied. I have to ask you to pack your things and step away until this is sorted out.”
I walked out of my office twenty minutes later with my personal belongings in a cardboard box, my income stripped away in an instant.
When I got back to my apartment, things were even worse.
Megan was sitting at the kitchen table with a young woman named Sarah Jenkins, a fierce, sharp-eyed attorney from the Legal Aid Society whom I had contacted earlier that morning. Spread across the table were half a dozen legal notices served by Richard’s process servers.
“He filed an emergency ex-parte motion for temporary custody of Sophie,” Sarah explained to me, her fingers tapping rhythmically on a legal pad. “He’s claiming that Megan is an unfit parent, citing her past history with postpartum depression, her current lack of employment, and alleging that she fabricated the domestic abuse incident due to a severe psychological breakdown.”
“He’s trying to take my daughter!” Megan wept, her uninjured hand clutching Sarah’s forearm. “Sarah, he has millions! He hired the top family law attorney in the county!”
“Let him hire whoever he wants,” Sarah said, her voice calm, crisp, and utterly devoid of fear. “Money can buy legal delay tactics, Megan, but it cannot change physical reality. He made a huge mistake filing that emergency motion.”
I set my box on the counter and walked over. “Why is it a mistake?”
Sarah smiled, a predatory, brilliant grin. “Because to get an emergency custody hearing, Richard’s lawyers had to file an affidavit under oath stating that he has never engaged in domestic violence in the home. They swore under penalty of perjury that he is a safe, stable guardian.”
Sarah reached into her briefcase and pulled out a thumb drive.
“You gave me two videos,” Sarah continued, looking at me and then at Sophie, who was listening intently from the hallway doorway. “The first video from Tuesday night shows him shoving Megan and choking her. The second video—the one Sophie recorded three months ago—shows him terrorizing Evelyn and threatening to throw her out. But more importantly... I spent the last three hours digging into his past.”
We leaned in closer.
“Richard Hale was married once before he met your mother,” Sarah revealed, dropping a thick sheaf of public court records onto the table. “Fifteen years ago, in Cuyahoga County. His ex-wife filed for divorce citing extreme mental and physical cruelty. She filed a police report for strangulation, but the charges were dropped after a confidential financial settlement was reached.”
Megan gasped. “He has a history of this...”
“He has a pattern,” Sarah corrected sharply. “A documented pattern of domestic abuse, strangulation, and using financial settlements to silence his victims. He lied under oath on his custody affidavit today. He committed perjury.”
Sarah stood up, buttoning her suit jacket with decisive confidence.

“They think they’re playing a game of intimidation against two helpless sisters,” Sarah said, her eyes flashing with determination. “They think because you don't have a corporate law team, you’ll fold. But tomorrow morning is our preliminary hearing for the Restraining Order and the Custody Motion. I am going to walk into that courtroom and give the judge a masterclass in domestic violence prosecution.”
I looked at Megan, and for the first time in forty-eight hours, I saw a spark of hope return to her eyes. We were broke, I was suspended from my job, and our family was shattered, but we were no longer running. We were fighting back.
