Chapter 1 - The Secret Recording

My mother called and said, “Your sister is in the hospital. Don’t ask questions. Just come.” When I arrived, my sister had a broken wrist, my stepfather had scratches across his face, and Mom insisted it was an accident. Then my terrified 12-year-old niece pulled me aside and showed me what she had secretly recorded from the stairs.

The call came at 8:17 on a Tuesday night.

“Your sister is in the hospital,” my mother said. “Don’t ask questions. Just come.”

By the time I reached St. Vincent Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio, my younger sister, Megan, was sitting behind a curtain in the emergency department with her left wrist wrapped in a temporary splint. Her eyes were swollen from crying. Our stepfather, Richard Hale, stood near the sink with four red scratches running from his cheek to his jaw.

Mom kept saying the same thing.

“It was an accident.”

No one looked at me when she said it.

I asked Megan what happened.

She stared at the floor.

Richard answered for her. “She slipped in the kitchen. Grabbed at me on the way down.”

Mom nodded too quickly. “Exactly. An accident.”

Then my twelve-year-old niece, Sophie, appeared at my elbow.

“Aunt Claire.”

Her voice was barely audible.

She tugged my sleeve and led me into the hallway near the vending machines. Her hands shook so badly she nearly dropped her phone.

“Grandma is lying,” she whispered.

Before I could answer, she opened a video.

The recording was dark and tilted, filmed through the railing from the upstairs staircase. I recognized my mother’s kitchen below.

Richard was shouting.

“You think you can walk into my house and tell me how to speak to my wife?”

Megan stood between him and Mom.

“Stop yelling at her.”

Richard stepped forward.

Mom said, “Megan, don’t.”

Then Richard shoved my sister.

Not hard enough to send her flying, but hard enough that she stumbled backward into the edge of the kitchen island. Megan cried out and grabbed her wrist.

Sophie’s breathing could be heard behind the phone.

Then came the part that made my stomach drop.

Mom rushed to Megan, but not to help her.

“Listen to me,” she said. “You slipped. Do you understand?”

Richard touched the scratches on his face.

Megan looked up at him. “I scratched you because you grabbed my throat.”

The phone image jerked.

Richard glanced toward the stairs.

Sophie stopped the recording.

For several seconds, I could hear only the hospital ventilation system.

“How much did you record?” I asked.

“Almost four minutes.”

“Did anyone see you?”

She shook her head.

Then a voice behind us said, “Claire?”

Mom was standing at the end of the hallway.

Her face had gone completely white.

Her eyes moved from Sophie to the phone in my hand.

And in that instant, I knew she understood exactly what we had seen.

Mom stepped closer, but I moved the phone behind my back. Sophie gripped my coat. Mom lowered her voice.

“Give me the phone, Claire. Right now.”

May you like

I stared at her.

“No.”
