Chapter 9 - Healing the Fractures

The police took our statements. With Clara and Mrs. Gable backing me up, and with the photos of Graham's bruises and the text messages as evidence, the officers took the matter very seriously. They filed a report for child abuse against Austin and child neglect against my mother. Social services were contacted, but because Clara stepped forward as a temporary legal guardian for both of us, Graham and I were allowed to stay at the estate.

The days that followed the confrontation were filled with a strange, quiet peace.

The biggest change, however, was in the main house.

The reunion between Clara and Mr. Miller was not filled with dramatic tears or shouting. It was quiet, tentative, and deeply moving. Clara walked into the library where her father sat. He looked up, his cloudy eyes focusing on her face.

For a moment, the fog of his dementia seemed to clear entirely.

"Clara?" he whispered, his voice cracking. "My beautiful girl."

"Hi, Dad," she said, walking over and kneeling by his chair, taking his frail hand in hers. "I’m home."

I watched from the doorway, holding Graham's hand. He looked up at me and smiled.

"They're not mad anymore, Nellie," Graham said.

"No, buddy. They're not mad anymore."

With Clara now managing the estate, she moved into the main house to be closer to her father. She kept me on as the official assistant caretaker, but with a significant raise and a promise that she would help fund my college education when I was ready to start.

My mother called me a month later. She was crying. She told me she had finally kicked Austin out. She begged me to bring Graham back, to come home.

I felt a pang of sadness for her, but I knew I couldn't go back. The cycle of abuse was broken, and I couldn't risk Graham's safety or my own progress.

"I love you, Mom," I told her, my voice steady. "But we are staying here. This is our home now. If you want to see Graham, you have to go to therapy, and you have to prove to the court that you are safe. Until then, we are staying with Clara."

She wept, but she didn't argue. For the first time, she seemed to accept the consequences of her choices.
