Chapter 10 - A Future Bright and Clear

Two years passed.
The Miller Estate had transformed from a quiet, isolating museum into a place of life and laughter.
Mr. Miller’s health had declined, but he spent his remaining days surrounded by love, often sitting in the garden listening to Graham read to him. When he finally passed away, it was peaceful, holding his daughter Clara’s hand. He left the estate to Clara, with a trust fund set up specifically for Graham's future education and care, and a generous scholarship fund for me.
Today is a beautiful, warm summer Saturday.
I am nineteen now. I am in my first year of college, studying child psychology, with the goal of helping other neurodivergent children navigate the world. I still live in the cozy stone cottage on the estate, which Clara insists is ours for as long as we want it.
Out in the backyard, a large wooden table is set up under the shade of the oak trees. Clara is there, laughing as she pours lemonade. Martha, who retired from the diner and now works as the estate's head housekeeper, is setting down a platter of grilled chicken.
And there is Graham.
He is ten years old now. He is taller, his cheeks rosy and full of health. He is currently standing at the edge of the woods, wearing his noise-canceling headphones to block out the loud lawnmower next door, but he has a giant, bright smile on his face. He is watching a family of deer graze in the clearing.
He doesn't flinch when people walk by. He doesn't whisper that everything is his fault. He is safe. He is loved. He is whole.
I walk out onto the porch, holding a bowl of fresh strawberries. Graham sees me and runs over, his eyes sparkling.
"Nellie! Look! A baby deer!" he says, pointing eagerly.

"I see it, champ," I say, wrapping my arm around his shoulders. He leans into me, completely relaxed, completely secure.
We had survived the storm. We had found our sanctuary. And as I looked out at the beautiful, sunlit gardens, I knew that whatever the future held, we would face it together, happy and free.
