Part 5: The Final Arrest

The pieces of the puzzle fell violently into place, leaving me breathless.

“A trap,” I repeated, looking back and forth between Grant and Viktor. “You used my bakery as a staging ground for your syndicate war?”

“It wasn't supposed to happen here,” Grant said quickly, his hands reaching out to grab mine, though I pulled them back. “Viktor’s intelligence unit tracked Vanessa here because she caught wind of the microchip. Claire, I swear to God, I had no idea you worked in this specific bakery. When I walked through those doors today and saw you… my heart stopped. Winning this war meant nothing compared to finding you again.”

“Daddy?”

A small, hesitant voice broke the heavy tension in the room. Lily peeked out from behind my apron, her wide gray eyes—the exact replica of Grant’s—studying the armed guards and the zip-tied prisoner on the table.

Grant’s expression softened instantly. He lowered himself further onto the floor, ignoring the broken glass and spilled flour around him.

“Yes, sweetheart?” Grant asked gently, his voice thick with emotion.

“Are you really my dad?” Lily asked, tilting her head. “Mommy told me my dad was a prince who had to go away on a very important quest to keep us safe from dragons.”

Grant let out a choked, wet laugh that sounded dangerously close to a sob. He looked up at me, his eyes pleading for forgiveness.

“I was fighting dragons, Lily,” Grant whispered, tears finally spilling over his eyelashes. “And I lost my way for a while. But I’m back now. And I am never, ever leaving you or your mother again.”

Vanessa, still pinned against the table by Owen, let out a hysterical laugh. “You think you’ve won, Whitmore? My father’s primary accounts are offshore! The federal indictments won’t touch him!”

“Your father was arrested twenty minutes ago, Vanessa,” a cool, crisp voice announced from the doorway.

A tall woman in a tailored federal prosecutor’s suit stepped into the room, flanked by two FBI agents. She flashed a badge at Grant. “Special Agent Miller, Federal Organized Crime Task Force. Thanks to the decrypted audio log on that microchip, we have enough racketeering and murder charges to lock the entire Crowe family away for multiple life sentences.”

Owen finally hauled Vanessa to her feet, shoving her toward the federal agents, who quickly slapped steel handcuffs over her zip-ties and led her out into the blinding afternoon sun.
