Part 4: Broken Alliances

The cold metal barrel of Vanessa’s gun gleamed under the bakery lights.

Before my breath could catch, Owen moved. It was a blur of motion—a sharp sweep of his leg and a calculated strike to Vanessa’s wrist. The revolver discharged with a deafening crack, blasting a hole through the marble floor tiles before skittering across the room. Owen twisted Vanessa’s arm behind her back, slamming her down onto the table with professional precision.

“Clear!” Owen barked into his lapel communicator.

Almost instantly, the heavy bakery glass doors shattered inward. Heavy combat boots hit the floor as four of Grant’s private security guards flooded the room, subduing the two Crowe syndicate enforcers who had been waiting outside in a black sedan.

Grant didn’t even look at Vanessa as Owen zip-tied her wrists behind her back. He dropped to his knees in front of me and Lily, his hands hovering nervously in the air as if he were afraid to touch us.

“Claire… are you alright? Lily?” Grant asked, his voice shaking with a vulnerability I had never seen in the five years I knew him.

“We’re fine,” I said coldly, pulling Lily back against my chest. “Get her out of here, Grant. And get out of my bakery.”

“I’m not leaving,” he said, his jaw set in stubborn defiance. “Not without you. Not without my daughter.”

“You traded us to save your empire,” I spat back, the memory of that terrible night flashing before my eyes. “You told me you had to marry her to stop a war. How do I know you won’t find another excuse tomorrow?”

“Because the war is already over,” a deep, gravelly voice echoed from the shattered entrance.

We all turned. Stepping through the broken glass was Viktor Vance—the head of the rival syndicate, and the man Grant had supposedly been waging a silent war against for a decade. But Viktor wasn’t holding a weapon. He was holding a file folder bearing the federal prosecutor’s seal.

“Grant didn’t tell you the whole truth, Claire,” Viktor said calmly, walking into the room with a faint, tired smile. He looked down at Sadie, who ran over and hugged his leg. Viktor rested a gentle hand on the little girl's head. “The war with the Crowes wasn't territorial. It was an internal coup. Elena was my informant. When Vanessa murdered her, she thought she buried the evidence with her.”

Grant looked up at Viktor, stunned. “You knew?”

“I funded Elena’s investigation,” Viktor corrected quietly. “And Sadie is my granddaughter. Elena hid her with a trusted nanny before Vanessa could reach her. We needed Vanessa to expose herself, and bringing her here today was the trap.”
