Chapter 5 - The Confrontation

The solid oak door splintered inward with a deafening crack. Vincent kicked it open, stepping into the nursery with his gun raised, eyes scanning the room. Vivien followed closely behind, holding her designer satchel tightly against her chest.
"Where is she?" Vivien demanded, looking around the empty room, her eyes landing on the open window curtain fluttering in the wind. "She went out the window!"
"No, she didn't," Vincent said coldly, noticing the open metal chute door in the corner of the wall. "She used the service chute."
I stepped out from behind the heavy mahogany wardrobe, holding a heavy bronze statuette I had grabbed from the shelf. With all the force in my body, I swung it straight at Vincent's head.
The bronze struck him square across the jaw. Vincent groaned, staggering backward, his gun firing wildly into the ceiling as plaster rained down. But he was a seasoned soldier—he didn't fall. He recovered instantly, spinning around and grabbing my wrist with a grip like a steel vise, wrenching the statuette from my fingers and throwing me violently against the floor.
"You stupid bitch," Vincent growled, wiping blood from his lip.
"Enough, Vincent! Kill her and let's go!" Vivien shrieked, looking nervously at her gold watch. "The perimeter guards are already compromised, but Lorenzo's men are coming back up from the security room!"
Vincent pointed the muzzle of his gun directly at my forehead. I lay on the floor, breathless, my chest heaving, staring up into the cold, dead eyes of the man who had betrayed his leader.
"You were just wrong place, wrong time, Sophia," Vincent said quietly. "You should have stayed in the city."
"And you should have been more careful with your security codes," a deep, furious voice echoed from the doorway.
Vincent turned, but it was too late.
Lorenzo stood in the shattered doorway, blood dripping down the left side of his face from a superficial temple graze, but his eyes were pure, unadulterated venom. Before Vincent could bring his weapon up, Lorenzo fired two precise shots.
The sound was deafening in the enclosed space. Vincent collapsed onto the floor with a heavy thud, his weapon sliding across the hardwood floor.
Vivien screamed, dropping her leather satchel and backing up against the far wall, her hands raised in terror. "Lorenzo! Please! He forced me! Vincent forced me to do this! He threatened to kill me if I didn't give him the codes!"
Lorenzo walked into the room, stepping over Vincent's motionless body without even looking down. He walked straight toward Vivien, his gun remaining lowered at his side, his expression terrifyingly calm.
"You always were a terrible actress, Vivien," Lorenzo said softly. His voice was lower than a whisper, yet it filled the entire room. "I tracked the offshore accounts half an hour ago. The wire transfers to the Moretti family weren't signed by Vincent. They were signed using your family's foundation in Zurich."
Vivien's face paled, all the charm and elegance draining out of her in an instant. "Lorenzo... we can work this out. My father has connections in Washington... we can make you untouchable..."
"You targeted a three-year-old child," Lorenzo interrupted, his tone chillingly flat. "You put stolen medicine in a baby's bag to cover up your paper trail. You tried to ruin an innocent woman's life."
"She's a servant!" Vivien shrieked, losing her composure entirely, her face twisting into an ugly mask of hatred. "She's nobody! A penniless maid! How dare you choose her and her broken child over me!"
Lorenzo stopped inches away from her. He reached out, his hand wrapping gently around her throat—not squeezing, but holding her completely immobile.
"She is twice the woman you will ever be," Lorenzo said quietly. "And unlike you... she has a soul."
He turned his head toward the door, where three of his most loyal lieutenants suddenly appeared, weapons drawn.
"Take her to the basement cellars," Lorenzo commanded coldly. "Notify her father that the alliance with the Moretti family is officially over. And tell him if he wants his daughter back, he will hand over every asset his family owns in New York by sunrise."
"Lorenzo! No! You can't do this to me! Lorenzo!" Vivien screamed as the lieutenants dragged her violently out of the room, her high heels scraping against the floor until her cries faded down the long corridor.
Lorenzo turned to me immediately, dropping his gun onto the table and kneeling beside me on the floor.
"Sophia," he said, his voice laced with genuine worry as he gently put his hands on my shoulders. "Are you hurt? Did he hurt you?"
"I'm okay," I gasped, holding my bruised wrist. "Emma... Emma is in the laundry chute! I sent her down to the basement!"
May you like
Lorenzo's eyes widened. "The basement laundry room is locked from the outside. She's safe down there. Come on."
He helped me to my feet, wrapping a strong arm around my waist to support me as we hurried out of the room, leaving the shadows of treason behind us.
