Chapter 2 - Cracks in the Syndicate

The air in Lorenzo Duca’s private study was thick with the scent of old leather, expensive bourbon, and tobacco. Outside, the rain lashed against the tall French windows overlooking the manicured lawns of the Long Island estate, but inside, the atmosphere was suffocatingly still. Lorenzo stood behind his mahogany desk, his dark eyes fixed on the illuminated monitors that showed the security logs.

I stood in the center of the room, holding Emma close to my hip. She had fallen asleep from exhaustion, her small thumb tucked into her mouth, her tiny chest rising and falling against my sweater. I could feel every shallow breath she took, a constant reminder of how fragile her world—and mine—really was.

"Eight minutes," Lorenzo said softly. His voice was low, carrying a dangerous edge that made the hair on my arms stand up. "Eight minutes of dark feed right outside the primary staff quarters. Vincent, explain to me how a system that cost me three million dollars suddenly experiences a localized blackout."

Vincent Russo, standing near the door with his hands folded neatly in front of his tailored suit, didn't flinch. He had been Lorenzo’s right hand for over a decade, a man who moved through the underworld with cold, surgical efficiency.

"The mainframe logs indicate a administrative override from the secondary terminal in the north wing," Vincent replied, his tone perfectly even. "It was executed using a high-level security clearance code. My code, your code, or Vivien’s."

"I was with the caterers in the grand ballroom at seven-forty," Vivien chimed in instantly. She was sitting on the velvet sofa across from the desk, dabbing delicately at the corners of her eyes with a lace handkerchief. Her silk blouse was immaculate, her gold jewelry catching the soft dim light of the room. "Lorenzo, darling, you know I barely know how to operate the tablet in the kitchen, let alone override a military-grade security server. Vincent must have made a mistake, or perhaps someone stole the access fob."

I looked directly at Vivien. Her eyes met mine for a fraction of a second, and beneath her display of innocence, I saw the cold, calculating intelligence that she so carefully hid behind her socialite persona.

"You were in the north hall at seven-thirty, Vivien," I said, my voice trembling slightly before I forced it to steady. "I saw you coming out of the server room annex when I was taking the laundry down."

Vivien laughed—a light, musical sound that felt completely out of place in the dark room. "Sophia, sweetie, you’re confused. I was in the breakfast nook having coffee. Ask the kitchen staff. You're panicked because you were caught with stolen medicine, and now you're throwing wild accusations at everyone to save yourself."

"I didn't take those bottles!" I snapped, my grip tightening on Emma. "Why would I take medication for Isabella’s condition? It’s a completely different beta-blocker! If I gave that to Emma, it could stop her heart!"

"That assumes you knew the difference," Vivien counteracted smoothly, turning to Lorenzo. "Lorenzo, look at her bank records. She’s behind on her rent for her apartment in the city, her medical bills are piling up, and she’s been asking the accountant for advances on her salary for three weeks. She didn't want the pills for Emma. She wanted to sell them on the black market. Isabella’s medication costs six thousand dollars a box without insurance. Four bottles... that's nearly twenty-four grand."

The math was brutal, and it was true—not the theft, but the debt. I had been drowning in medical bills ever since Emma’s diagnosis. Vivien had laid the trap masterfully. She had established motive, access, and financial desperation all in one breath.

Lorenzo didn't look at Vivien. He didn't look at me either. He stepped out from behind the desk and walked slowly toward us. He stopped a foot away, looking down at Emma's sleeping face.

"Sophia," Lorenzo said softly. "You've been in my house for seven months. You've cooked for my daughter, you've read her bedtime stories when I was away on... business. Isabella trusts you."

"And I would lay down my life for Isabella, Mr. Duca," I whispered, tears brimming in my eyes. "Just like I would for Emma. I didn't touch those bottles. Someone put them in her bag while she was playing in the playroom."

Lorenzo reached out, his calloused fingers gently brushing a stray lock of hair from Emma's forehead. The contrast between this ruthless crime lord and the grieving, protective father was startling. His wife had passed away two years ago from the same genetic heart defect that Isabella now fought, and everyone in the Duca syndicate knew that Isabella was his entire world.

"Vincent," Lorenzo commanded without turning around.

"Yes, Boss?"

"Bring the head of IT up here. Now. And lock down the estate. Nobody leaves. Not the guards, not the staff, not Vivien."

Vivien stiffened, her handkerchief freezing mid-motion. "Lorenzo! You can't be serious! You're locking down the house because of a maid's lies?"

May you like

"I am locking down the house because someone compromised my security," Lorenzo said, turning his piercing gaze onto his fiancée. "And because someone put my daughter's life at risk by taking her medication out of her room. Until I know who wiped those eight minutes, everyone is a suspect."

Vincent bowed his head silently and exited the room, pulling out his encrypted phone as he walked. The heavy oak doors clicked shut behind him, leaving a suffocating silence in the room. I could feel the invisible gears of the mafia family turning, and for the first time, I realized that the threat wasn't just to my daughter and me. Something much bigger was tearing the Duca empire apart from the inside.
