Chapter 9 - Healing the Heart

A year passed. The wounds that had been carved deep into our hearts began to heal into faint, painless scars.
Sophie flourished in her new school. Without the constant dark cloud of her grandparents’ emotional abuse hanging over her, her confidence bloomed. She joined the school art club, made wonderful friends, and her laughter became a constant, beautiful soundtrack in our new home.
Sadie remained our faithful guardian. Though her muzzle grew grayer and her cloudiness in one eye deepened, her spirit remained radiant. She seemed to know that we had fought a war for her, and in return, she gave us every ounce of love her sweet soul possessed.
One afternoon, a thick envelope arrived in the mail addressed to Colin. It was from a law firm representing Gordon.
Gordon had suffered a mild stroke two months prior. The letter stated that he was in physical therapy and wished to request a single meeting with Colin and Sophie to "apologize and seek reconciliation before it was too late."
Colin sat at the kitchen table holding the letter for a long time. I sat down beside him, taking his hand, letting him process the heavy weight of the choice.
"Do you want to see him?" I asked gently.
Colin looked out the window toward the backyard, where Sophie was throwing a tennis ball for Sadie. Sadie was jogging happily, her tail wagging furiously in the crisp autumn air.

"No," Colin said softly, but with absolute conviction. "Forgiveness doesn't mean allowing toxic people back into your life to ruin what you've built. He didn't care about my family when he tried to sell our dog and steal our money. He only cares now because he's lonely and broke."
Colin took the letter, folded it in half, and placed it neatly into the recycling bin. He walked out to the backyard, dropped to his knees, and pulled both Sophie and Sadie into a warm, fierce embrace.
