Chapter 7 - The Reckoning at the Altar

The Grand Bellevue ballroom was magnificent. Hundreds of guests sat at circular tables adorned with towering white orchids and flickering candles. At the front of the room stood the main stage, flanked by three massive, high-definition projection screens that currently displayed a rotating monogram of "C & O."

The dinner service had just concluded. The atmosphere was celebratory, fueled by free-flowing top-shelf liquor.

Damon leaned over to me at the head table, whispering, "You okay, babe? You haven't touched your steak."

"Just waiting for the speeches," I said, offering him a serene smile.

The band leader stepped up to the microphone. "Ladies and gentlemen, if I could have your attention please. Before we begin the couple's first dance, we have a very special presentation. Put together by the best man, Mr. Damon Vance, and the matron of honor, Mrs. Elena Vance, this is a look through the years at the beautiful love story of Claire and Owen."

The room dimmed. The chatter faded into a hushed, expectant silence.

Claire turned to Owen, her face glowing with delight. "Oh, honey, you didn't tell me they made a video!"

"It's a surprise, corporate secret," Owen said, his voice entirely devoid of warmth. He didn't look at her; he looked directly at the center screen.

The presentation began. Uplifting acoustic music played through the ballroom's state-of-the-art sound system. Photos of Claire and Owen in college filled the screens. The audience hummed with collective "awws."

Then, at the three-minute mark, the music abruptly cut out.

The screens glitched, transitioning to a stark black background with white text: THE REAL TIMELINE OF A MARRIAGE.

The ballroom went dead silent. A few people laughed nervously, thinking it was a joke.

Then, the security logs appeared.

In crisp, undeniable clarity, the spreadsheet filled the massive screens. On the left side: my prenatal medical appointments. On the right side: Claire’s security entry codes to my house, flashing in bright, neon red.

"What is this?" Claire’s father shouted from the front row, standing up. "Is this a joke?"

Before anyone could answer, the screen swiped to the next slide. It was the high-definition photograph of the champagne lace camisole under my bed. Beneath it, a text message chain from Claire’s cloned phone appeared, blown up to a size where everyone in the room could read it:

Claire (11:22 AM): "Left my underwear under the bed. Make sure Elena doesn't see it. She’s coming back from the ultrasound soon." Damon (11:24 AM): "Got it covered. She’s so stupid she’ll believe anything I say anyway. Can't wait for tonight."

A collective, horrified gasp tore through the three hundred guests.

Damon snapped out of his trance, his face going from pale to a deep, toxic purple. He lunged out of his chair toward the AV booth. "Turn it off! Turn the damn thing off!"

But the AV crew had locked their booth from the inside, following Owen's strict instructions.

The screens swiped again. The audio system roared to life with the video clip I had taken just three hours prior in the bridal suite. Claire’s voice echoed through the massive ballroom, crystal clear and booming: “Tonight, while Owen is drunk at the hotel bar, meet me in the east wing stairwell.”

"No! No, that's not me! That’s fake! That’s AI!" Claire shrieked, standing up so fast her chair flipped backward, crashing onto the hardwood floor. She turned to Owen, her hands clawing at his tuxedo jacket. "Owen, please! It's a setup! Elena is crazy, she’s jealous, she made this up!"

Owen calmly reached down, peeled her fingers off his lapel one by one, and stood up. He picked up his microphone from the table.

"The wedding is over," Owen’s voice echoed through the room, steady and cold as steel. "The marriage will be annulled by Monday morning. Claire, your bags are already packed and sitting in the hotel lobby. Damon..."

Owen turned to look at my husband, who was standing frozen in the middle of the ballroom floor, surrounded by the horrified, disgusted stares of his parents, his boss, and his friends.

"You can take your garbage out of my sight," Owen said.

I stood up slowly, smoothing down my green dress. I walked around the table, standing right beside Owen. I looked at Damon, who was trembling, completely stripped of his arrogance, his lies laid bare before everyone who mattered to him.

"Goodbye, Damon," I said quietly.

I turned and walked out of the ballroom, Owen right beside me, leaving the wreckage of their lives to burn in the background.
