Chapter 10 - A New Dawn for Us

Three years later, the sun broke over the horizon of the Amalfi Coast, painting the Italian sky in brilliant shades of amber, gold, and deep violet.

I stood on the balcony of a beautiful stone villa overlooking the sea, wrapped in a soft cream shawl. Below, the turquoise waters lapped gently against the cliffs. The air smelled of salt, lemon trees, and fresh pastries from the bakery down the lane.

A pair of small, warm arms wrapped around my knees.

"Mama! Look! Big boat!" four-year-old Maya chirped, pointing her small finger toward a distant yacht sailing across the glittering water. She was a beautiful, vibrant child, her eyes full of curiosity and light.

"It is a big boat, sweetie," a deep voice said from behind us.

Owen stepped out onto the balcony, holding two cups of espresso. He knelt down beside Maya, adjusting the small sunhat on her head. "Do you want to go down to the harbor today and see it up close?"

"Yes! And get gelato!" she squealed, clapping her hands before running back inside the villa to play with her toy blocks.

Owen stood up, handing me a cup of espresso. He looked at me, his eyes crinkling at the corners with a profound, quiet happiness. He reached out, his thumb gently wiping a stray strand of hair from my cheek. On his left ring finger, a simple, elegant platinum band caught the Mediterranean sun.

We had been married six months prior in a quiet, private ceremony in a botanical garden, surrounded only by the people who truly loved us. There were no grand ballroom projections, no massive crowds, no performances. It was simple, pure, and holy.

"You're thinking about the past," Owen said softly, reading my mind as he always did.

"Just for a second," I admitted, taking a sip of the warm espresso. "Just thinking about how a different version of this trip was planned once. How a different lace camisole was supposed to be packed in a suitcase."

Owen smiled, pulling me into his arms, holding me tight against his chest. I could hear the steady, rhythmic beat of his heart—a sound that had become my ultimate safe harbor.

"That was a different lifetime, El," he whispered into my hair. "Those people didn't know what love was. They only knew how to take. But look what we built out of the pieces they broke."

I looked back inside the villa, watching Maya laugh as she successfully stacked her blocks into a tall tower. Then I looked at the man beside me—the partner who had stood by me in the darkest depths of betrayal, who had helped me rebuild a life of absolute truth, integrity, and deep, unshakeable devotion.

The past was gone. The shadows in the closet had been brought into the light and completely burned away.

I smiled, leaning up to kiss my husband under the warm Italian sun.

"We built something beautiful," I whispered against his lips. "And it’s entirely ours."
