Chapter 9 - The Final Verdict and New Beginnings

Three months later, the courtroom of the city’s federal district court was packed to capacity.

Sitting at the defendant’s table in a standard orange jumpsuit, looking hollowed-out, pale, and broken, was Ryan Vance. Next to him sat a tired public defender who looked like he wanted nothing more than to be anywhere else in the world.

Seated at the plaintiff’s advisory table, flanked by Marcus Vance and a team of legal experts, I sat in a tailored white wool coat, calm, poised, and utterly serene.

The judge, a stern-faced woman with decades of experience on the bench, adjusted her glasses and looked down at the documents spread out before her.

“In the case of Sterling Holdings et al. versus Ryan Vance,” the judge began, her voice echoing clearly through the silent courtroom, “the defendant has been found guilty on all counts of grand larceny, corporate forgery, fraudulent misrepresentation, and financial manipulation.”

Ryan lowered his head, squeezing his eyes shut as the reality of his sentence finally crashed down around him.

“For these severe offenses against corporate integrity and private assets, this court sentences the defendant, Ryan Vance, to seven years in federal prison without the possibility of parole for the first three years, alongside full restitution of all defrauded assets.”

Gavel.

The sharp crack of the wooden gavel sounded like a gunshot in the quiet room.

It was over.

As the bailiffs handcuffed Ryan and led him away through the side door, he glanced back once toward my table. For a split second, our eyes met. There was no anger left in me—only a profound, quiet pity for a man who had possessed everything that mattered, yet chose to destroy it all for nothing.

I stood up, buttoned my coat, and walked out of the courtroom doors into the warm afternoon sunshine outside.

My black limousine was waiting at the curb. Marcus opened the door for me, bowing slightly.

“Where to, Miss Sterling? Back to headquarters?” Marcus asked.

I smiled, thinking of the two little miracles waiting for me back at the estate, growing stronger, healthier, and brighter every single day.

“No, Marcus,” I said, stepping into the luxurious leather interior. “Take me home.”
