Chapter 6 - The Shadows of the Past

Two weeks later, the morning sun poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the Sterling Estate master suite, illuminating the delicate floral wallpaper and the rows of mahogany bookshelves lining the walls.
I stood in front of the full-length mirror, adjusting the collar of my charcoal-grey wool blazer. My hair was tied back in a sleek, professional chignon, and a pair of pearl earrings caught the morning light. On the king-size bed behind me, Ethan and Emma were softly cooing, wrapped in matching cashmere blankets while two private nurses kept a watchful eye over them.
Today was my first official day back at Sterling Enterprises headquarters. Not as an anonymous employee or a struggling freelancer, but as the Executive Vice President of Global Brand Strategy.
A soft knock sounded at the door, and Grandfather stepped into the room, leaning on his silver-headed cane. He took one look at me and smiled, his chest swelling with pride.
“Magnificent,” Grandfather said approvingly. “You look every bit the head of the family.”
“Thank you, Grandfather,” I said, picking up my leather briefcase from the desk. “Are you sure you don’t mind staying with the twins today? I can easily push my meetings back—”
“Nonsense,” Grandfather interrupted with a wave of his hand. “There is nothing I enjoy more in this world than spoiling my great-grandchildren. Besides, our security detail around the estate is tighter than a military base. Not even a fly gets in here without my personal clearance.”
I smiled, walking over to kiss both Ethan and Emma on their soft, warm foreheads. “Mommy will be home for dinner,” I whispered to them.
As I walked down the grand marble staircase and out toward the waiting black limousine, I couldn’t help but think about how fragile life really was. Just weeks ago, I had been trapped in a loveless marriage with a man who despised my quiet nature, believing I was entirely dependent on him. Now, I was stepping into a skyscraper bearing my own family name, fully in control of my destiny.

Little did I know, however, that while Ryan Vance was safely locked away behind iron bars awaiting trial, the ripples of his foolish choices hadn't completely vanished.
Deep in the financial district, miles away from the serenity of the Sterling Estate, a shadow was stirring—one connected not to Ryan, but to the desperate mess he had left behind.
