Chapter 6 - The Freezing of the Assets

With David and Margaret behind bars awaiting trial, the legal warfare shifted to the financial sector. As a former financial crimes attorney, I knew that securing an indictment was only half the battle; the real victory lay in completely dismantling their ability to fight back.

I spent the next week working side-by-side with the federal asset forfeiture unit.

"They’ve hidden funds in nested LLCs," I explained to the federal forensic accountants, pointing to a complex web on the whiteboards we had set up in my father's house. "David used a technique called 'layering.' He moved the stolen money from my trust into a commercial real estate project in Miami, then took out a loan against that project to fund a shell company in the Cayman Islands."

"If we can prove the initial source of the funds was fraudulent, we can freeze the entire chain," the lead agent remarked, taking notes.

"It’s already proven," I replied, clicking a button to bring up the electronic logs I had secretly copied from David’s laptop before the assault. "Here are the digital tokens. He authorized the transfers from our home IP address using my stolen credentials while I was asleep."

By Friday afternoon, a federal judge signed a sweeping Restraining Order over the Sterling estate. Every single asset tied to David and Margaret was frozen: their mansion, their luxury vehicles, their offshore accounts, and the corporate holdings of Sterling Holdings.

Margaret’s high-priced defense team suddenly found their retainer checks bouncing.

That evening, I received a frantic, recorded call from the detention center. It was Margaret. Her usual icy, aristocratic demeanor was entirely shattered.

"Sarah! You malicious little witch!" she screamed through the prison phone line. "We are sleeping on metal cots! They won't even let me have my medication! You’re destroying this family!"

"You destroyed this family the moment you watched your son break my leg and did nothing but finish your wine, Margaret," I said, holding the phone away from my ear so Emma wouldn't hear.

"We will fight this! We have resources!"

"No, you don't," I countered calmly. "As of two hours ago, the federal government has seized your bank accounts. Your attorneys are already filing motions to withdraw from the case because you can't pay them. You will be represented by a public defender, Margaret. Welcome to the real world."

I hung up. For the first time in four years, the crushing weight on my chest felt a little lighter. They were finally experiencing the helplessness they had inflicted on me for years.
