Chapter 10 - A New Dawn

A full year had passed since the night the rain hammered against the windows of the suburban estate.

Today, the sky was a brilliant, cloudless blue.

It was Emma’s first day of kindergarten. I stood by the front door of our new home, adjusting the straps of her oversized unicorn backpack. She looked up at me, her eyes sparkling, entirely free of the fear that had once shadowed her childhood.

"Mommy, are you going to the big office today?" she asked, her little hand gripping mine.

"I am, sweetie," I said, kneeling down to look her in the eye. "Mommy is going to help other mommies and kids feel safe, just like we are."

"Because we're a team," Emma said proudly, lifting two fingers in the air with a bright, mischievous grin.

I burst out laughing, a warm, healing sound that filled the entire house. I gently pressed her hand down. "Yes, we are a team. But from now on, that sign just means 'I love you.' No more secrets. No more hiding."

"I love you too, Mommy," she said, throwing her arms around my neck.

My father pulled up into the driveway, honking the horn of his sedan with a cheerful wave. He was taking Emma to school today so I could prepare for my first day of trials at the Attorney General’s office.

I watched Emma run down the sidewalk, her backpack bouncing, before climbing into the back seat and waving frantically out the window as they drove away.

I stood on the porch for a long moment, breathing in the fresh morning air. The limp in my leg was barely noticeable now, a tiny physical reminder of a battle fought and won.

David and Margaret were behind bars, serving sentences they had fully earned, stripped of their wealth, their power, and their name. But my thoughts weren't on them anymore. They belonged to the past, a closed chapter in a book that had no power over my future.

I walked inside, grabbed my briefcase, and locked the door behind me. I stepped out into the sunlight, ready to face the world on my own terms—no longer a victim, no longer fragile, but entirely, beautifully free.
