Chapter 8 - Rebuilding the Blueprint

With the trial behind me and the divorce finalized, the healing process truly began.

I was officially a free woman. The court had severed all ties between myself and the Sterling family. My Capitol Hill condo was entirely secure, the forged loans nullified by the bank after the fraud conviction.

I decided to remodel the apartment. I wanted to strip away every single memory of the years I had spent walking on eggshells around Diego. I tore down the heavy, dark curtains he had insisted on, letting the bright Colorado sunshine flood into the living room. I repainted the walls in soft, warm tones of cream and gold, and filled the space with vibrant green plants and modern, comfortable furniture that I chose myself.

One Saturday afternoon, Natalie came over to visit. She looked radiant. She had finalized her own divorce from Diego’s brother and had used her settlement to open a boutique bakery in the arts district.

"I brought celebratory cupcakes," Natalie laughed, holding up a beautifully decorated box.

"You look amazing, Natalie," I said, hugging her tightly.

"I feel amazing, Val. For the first time in my life, I feel like I can breathe," she said, looking around my newly renovated condo. "This place looks incredible. It feels... like you."

"It is me," I smiled, pouring us two glasses of champagne. "No more compromises. No more hiding."

We sat on my balcony, looking out over the beautiful Denver skyline. The mountains in the distance were capped with white snow, glowing gold in the afternoon sun.

"What's next for you, Valerie?" Natalie asked, raising her glass.

"I’m focusing on my work," I said, clinking my glass against hers. "And for the first time in a very long time, I’m actually looking forward to the future."
