Chapter 8 - The Price of Cruelty

Six months later, the criminal trial of Evan Reed commenced. Armed with the irrefutable video evidence, the recorded phone threats, and the medical testimony of Dr. Al-Jamil, the prosecution presented a flawless case.
Evan, stripped of his arrogance and his high-priced legal tricks, chose to plead guilty to felony domestic battery and misdemeanor child neglect rather than risk a maximum sentence from an enraged jury. The judge showed no mercy, sentencing him to three years in a state correctional facility, followed by five years of strict probation and mandatory intensive anger management rehabilitation.
Because of the criminal conviction, the final divorce proceedings were heavily weighted in my favor. The court awarded me the maximum financial settlement, including a substantial portion of his liquidated corporate shares, full ownership of our secondary properties, and permanent sole legal and physical custody of Sophie.
Margaret Reed attempted to contest the financial distribution, claiming that the family money belonged to her lineage, but the judge firmly dismissed her petitions. The Reeds were forced to sell their massive suburban estate to cover their compounding legal fees and the massive financial judgments against them. They moved away in disgrace, isolated and forgotten by the high society they had sacrificed their humanity to impress.
On the day the final divorce decree was signed, Marcus took me out to a quiet, elegant restaurant to celebrate. I raised a glass of sparkling water, looking at the official court document that declared me, legally and permanently, a free woman.

"You did it, Nat," Marcus said, his eyes full of pride. "You fought the monster and you won."
"I didn't just win for me," I said, looking out the window at the city skyline. "I won for Sophie. She will grow up knowing that a woman’s life, dignity, and safety are worth more than any man's pride or money."
