Chapter 6 - Confrontation in the Courtroom

The day of the temporary custody hearing arrived. The courthouse was cold and imposing. I wore a modest navy blue suit that Marcus had bought me, my hair pulled back neatly, showing the faint, fading mark on my cheek.

Evan sat across the aisle, looking impeccably groomed in a custom suit, flanked by Arthur Vance and a stone-faced Margaret. When Evan looked at me, he offered a smirk—a confident, arrogant look that said he believed his wealth would buy his way out of this, just like it always had.

Arthur Vance stood up first, presenting his case with smooth, practiced eloquence. "Your Honor, my client is a respected pillar of the community. A tragic misunderstanding occurred due to the medical distress of their child. Mrs. Reed became hysterical, and Mr. Reed merely attempted to restrain her for her own safety. We have character references from twelve prominent citizens attesting to Mrs. Reed’s unstable emotional history."

The judge, a stern woman named Judge Henderson, looked over her glasses at Marcus. "Mr. Miller, what do you have to say to these serious allegations against your client's mental stability?"

Marcus stood up slowly, adjusting his jacket. "Your Honor, the opposition has painted a very vivid picture of a hysterical woman. But we prefer to let the objective truth speak for itself. We submit into evidence Exhibit A: a verified, time-stamped security video retrieved from the marital home’s automated server from the night in question."

Vance jumped up. "Objection, Your Honor! This evidence was obtained without a proper subpoena from the primary account holder!"

"It was retrieved from a legally shared family cloud backup to which my client has full, authorized access, Your Honor," Marcus countered smoothly. "The law is clear on shared digital property during an active marriage."

"Objection overruled," Judge Henderson said. "Play the video."

The courtroom lights dimmed, and the large monitor on the wall came to life. The audio echoed through the silent room. The entire court watched as Margaret cruel-heartedly dismissed a dying child's fever. They watched Evan strike his wife with brutal force. They heard the terrifying, unhinged entitlement in his voice.

When the video ended, the silence in the room was deafening. Evan’s face had turned an ash-gray color. Margaret looked as though she might faint, her social standing evaporating into thin air with every second of the footage.

Judge Henderson’s expression was terrifyingly calm as she looked down at Evan. "Mr. Reed, do you recognize the man in this video?"

Evan swallowed hard, unable to speak. Vance tried to intervene. "Your Honor, if we could explain the context—"

"The context is clear, Mr. Vance," Judge Henderson snapped, her voice like cracking ice. "Temporary full custody of the minor child, Sophie Reed, is granted exclusively to the mother, Natalie Reed. Furthermore, I am upgrading the protective order to a permanent one. Mr. Reed, you are to have zero contact with your daughter or your wife until the criminal trial concludes. And I am forwarding this footage directly to the District Attorney with a recommendation for immediate prosecution for felony domestic violence and child abuse."
