Chapter 8 - The Shadow's Last Whisper

A year after the sentencing, a letter arrived at my office marked with the red stamp of the State Maximum Security Penitentiary.
It was from Daniel.
My hands trembled slightly as I held the envelope. Part of me wanted to run it straight through the paper shredder, but another part knew that to truly move forward, I needed to confront whatever last ghost he was trying to send from behind bars.
I opened the letter.
Rachel,
I am writing this from a cell I will never leave. Melissa attempted suicide last month in the women's facility; she is now in the psychiatric wing. We have lost everything.
I am not writing to ask for forgiveness. I know I do not deserve it. I write because I am dying. The prison doctors diagnosed me with aggressive stage-four liver cancer. I have less than six months.
I lied to you about many things, but I want you to know one truth: I was jealous of you. I was jealous of your father’s legacy, your strength, and the love Noah had for you that I could never force him to feel for me. I tried to destroy you because I couldn't control you.
Don't bring Noah here. Don't come yourself. Just know that the monster who hurt you is finally paying the ultimate price.
Daniel.
I sat at my desk for a long time, holding the piece of paper. I thought I would feel anger, or perhaps a bitter surge of satisfaction. But as I looked at his handwriting, all I felt was a profound sense of pity and relief.

The man who had tried to play God over my life and my son's life was reduced to a dying prisoner in a concrete cell, ruined by his own arrogance and greed.
I picked up the letter, walked over to the fireplace in my office, and struck a match. I held the corner of the paper to the flame and watched as Daniel Carter’s last words burned into harmless grey ash.
