Chapter 6 - The Verdict and the Sentence

The jury deliberated for less than three hours—a record for a capital attempted murder trial.

When the court reconvened, the tension in the room was palpable. The judge, Honorable Elena Rivera, took her seat on the bench and looked down at the defendants with cold solemnity.

"Will the defendants please stand and face the jury?" Judge Rivera ordered.

Daniel and Melissa stood up. Daniel attempted to maintain a posture of arrogant indifference, but the twitching muscle in his jaw betrayed his terror. Melissa had to be physically supported by her two defense attorneys.

The jury foreperson stood up, holding the official verdict forms.

"In the matter of State versus Daniel Carter, on Count One: Attempted First-Degree Premeditated Murder of Rachel Carter, how do you find?"

"Guilty," the foreperson announced.

A low gasp rippled through the gallery.

"On Count Two: Attempted First-Degree Premeditated Murder of Noah Carter, how do you find?"

"Guilty."

"On Count Three: Conspiracy to Commit Murder for Financial Gain, how do you find?"

"Guilty."

"On Count Four: Child Endangerment and Poisoning, how do you find?"

"Guilty."

The foreperson proceeded to read the verdicts for Melissa Vance. The word echoed through the courtroom like a hammer striking steel: Guilty. Guilty. Guilty. Guilty.

Melissa collapsed into her chair, hysterical tears streaming down her face. Daniel’s eyes closed, his face turning an ashen gray as reality finally shattered his delusion of grandeur.

Three weeks later, sentencing day arrived.

Judge Rivera did not hold back.

"Daniel Carter and Melissa Vance," Judge Rivera spoke, her voice cutting through the silent room. "In my twenty-five years on the bench, I have rarely witnessed such a complete absence of human empathy. You poisoned a child. You watched a mother suffer. You calculated the value of human life down to a insurance policy payout."

Judge Rivera struck her gavel down hard. "For the charges of attempted premeditated murder, child endangerment, and financial conspiracy, I sentence Daniel Carter to two consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole, plus forty years. I sentence Melissa Vance to sixty years in state penitentiary without eligibility for early release."

As the bailiffs stepped forward to lead them away in chains, Daniel turned his head, locking eyes with me one last time. For the first time in ten years, I saw complete defeat in his eyes.

I didn't blink. I didn't cry. I simply wrapped my hand around Marcus’s arm, turned my back on them, and walked out of the courtroom into the bright afternoon sun.
