Chapter 9 - A New Dawn

Two years after the darkest night of my life, the world outside our cottage window looked bright, green, and full of promise.

It was a Saturday morning in late spring. Sunlight streamed through the white lace curtains of our kitchen, casting warm golden patches across the hardwood floor. The smell of cinnamon pancakes filled the air as I flipped a golden round cake onto a ceramic plate.

"Mama! Pancake ready?"

A little voice chimed from the hallway, followed by the familiar, joyful thumping of small feet running across the floor.

Lucy burst into the kitchen, her dark curls bouncing around her shoulders, wearing a bright pink tutu and holding her blue stuffed bunny by one ear—just like she used to, only now she was four years old, full of boundless energy and infectious laughter.

She skidded to a halt near the kitchen island, grinning ear to ear.

"Almost ready, sweet girl," I laughed, kneeling down to wipe a speck of flour off her cheek. "Go wash your hands at the sink, and then we can eat outside on the patio."

"Okay, Mama!" she chirped, happily marching over to the step-stool to wash up.

I stood up and looked out the open kitchen window. The rain was gone, replaced by a clear, endless blue sky. The American flag on the porch of the house across the street fluttered gently in a warm morning breeze.

We had made it through the storm. Every scar, every tear, and every sleepless night had led us to this exact moment of peace, safety, and unconditional love.
