Chapter 6 - The Gathering Storm

The days following the arrest were a blur of legal depositions, social worker evaluations, and endless interviews with prosecutors from the District Attorney’s office. Every time I had to retell the story of that rainy Tuesday evening, a fresh wave of nausea washed over me, but I didn't break. I couldn't. Lucy needed me to be her armor.

By the end of the week, we were discharged from the hospital and temporarily relocated to a secure family safe-haven arranged by the state’s victim advocacy program.

Travis’s arraignment took place on a crisp Friday morning.

I didn't attend in person—Detective Vance advised me that staying away from the courtroom for the initial hearing was safer—but I watched the live video stream from a secure terminal at the DA’s office.

Travis sat at the defense table wearing an orange jumpsuit. His hair was slightly disheveled, but he still wore that same eerie, detached expression. When the judge read the formal charges—attempted murder in the second degree, felony child abuse, and aggravated assault—Travis didn't even blink. His court-appointed attorney leaned over to whisper something to him, but Travis ignored him, staring directly into the courtroom camera lens as if he knew I was watching on the other side.

"Bail is denied, given the severity of the charges, the overwhelming forensic evidence, and the pending reopening of the 2023 Ohio homicide investigation," the judge stated firmly, banging his gavel.

A heavy weight lifted off my chest, but the underlying tension remained. This was only the beginning of a long, arduous legal war.

Later that afternoon, Detective Vance dropped by the safe-house with an updated file.

"The Ohio authorities have officially reopened Lily’s case based on the journal entries we recovered," Vance told me as we sat at a small wooden kitchen table. "They’re exhuming her body next week for independent forensic testing. Your husband’s past is catching up to him in ways he never anticipated."

"Good," I said, my voice steady. "I want him to face every single consequence."

"He will, Elena," Vance said gently. "You saved your daughter's life that night. If you had hesitated for even two minutes... the outcome would have been the same as the first time."

Those words echoed in my mind long after Vance left. I walked over to the living room area where Lucy was sitting on the rug, stacking colorful wooden blocks into a wobbly tower.

She turned around, flashing a bright, gap-toothed smile, and held up a green block. "Look, Mama! Tall tower!"

"It's the tallest tower ever, baby," I whispered, kneeling down and wrapping my arms around her small, warm body.
