Mark was arrested before dawn.
The charges came later: unlawful surveillance, intimidation of a minor, and child endangerment.
But what stayed with me wasn’t the handcuffs.
It was what happened after the police left.
The house was finally quiet.
No hidden speakers.
No blinking camera lights.
No voice coming from the walls.
Ethan stood in the middle of the living room, looking around as if he expected someone to tell him where he was allowed to stand.
I knelt beside him.
“You don’t have to be afraid anymore.”
He searched my face carefully.
“Really?”
I nodded.
“Really.”
He was quiet for a long moment.
Then he asked the question that broke my heart.
“Can I close my bedroom door tonight?”
Tears filled my eyes.
“You can close it, lock it, or leave it open. It’s your room.”
That evening, we took down every camera the police had missed.
Ethan helped me unscrew the last one from the hallway ceiling.
When it came loose, he smiled—a small, uncertain smile, but the first real one I had ever seen from him.
Months later, after counseling and countless nights of reassurance, Ethan stopped whispering “Don’t tell Daddy.”
Instead, he began saying something else.
“Good night, Mom.”
