We locked ourselves in my bedroom.
Ethan climbed onto the bed and wrapped his arms around a pillow, shaking.
I could hear my own heartbeat.
Five minutes later, red and blue lights flashed across the curtains.
Two officers entered the house while a third spoke with me in the hallway.
When I told them about the basement, they went downstairs immediately.
One of the officers called up a moment later.
“Ma’am, we need you to stay here.”
His tone had changed.
Not alarmed.
Worse.
Careful.
An hour later, a detective arrived.
She introduced herself as Detective Ramirez.
“Mrs. Sullivan, the surveillance equipment appears to have been recording continuously for several years.”
My knees nearly gave out.
Ramirez continued.
“We also found hidden cameras that were not visible from the laptop feed.”
She paused.
“Including one inside Ethan’s bedroom smoke detector.”
I looked at Ethan.
He stared at the floor.
Detective Ramirez lowered her voice.
“There’s more. The recordings include conversations between Mr. Sullivan and the child.”
My throat tightened.
“Conversations about what?”
Ramirez hesitated.
“Threats. Isolation. Punishments designed to keep him from speaking to other adults.”
Ethan began to cry silently.

They were about control.
