Chapter 5 - The Unraveling

"Order! Order in this court!" Judge Higgins struck the gavel three times in rapid succession. "Ms. Mitchell, sit down and remain silent, or you will be escorted from the building!"

Chloe sank back into the gallery seat, her eyes burning with pure rage as she glared at Marcus. The romantic fantasy she had bought into had evaporated in less than twenty minutes, replaced by the grim reality that she had tied herself to a fraudulent broke man.

Judge Higgins looked down at Richard Sterling, who now looked thoroughly humiliated and deeply alarmed. "Mr. Sterling, did you verify any of these financial declarations before filing these emergency motions?"

"Your Honor..." Sterling swallowed hard, his face flushed red. "My client assured me that these assets were under his sole management and ownership. I was presented with documents that... that now appear to be inaccurate."

"Inaccurate is a very generous word for perjury and bank fraud, Mr. Sterling," Judge Higgins said grimly. She turned her piercing glare onto Marcus. "Mr. Vance, you came into my courtroom requesting an emergency order to strip your wife of her home, her accounts, and her dignity, while you were actively engaging in financial fraud, forgery, and grand conversion of marital assets."

"Your Honor, please!" Marcus stammered, his polished arrogance completely vanished. "It’s a misunderstanding! Eleanor and I... we can work this out! We’re married! It’s all joint property, right? We can just split everything!"

"It is not joint property, Mr. Vance," Denise spoke up smoothly. "The Vanguard Trust was created using non-marital funds derived entirely from Eleanor’s independent inheritance and her high-earning individual salary, which was deposited in separate accounts throughout the marriage. Under state law, you have zero claim to the trust."

Denise then pulled out another document. "Furthermore, regarding the 2024 Range Rover... Mr. Vance registered the vehicle under his corporate entity, Vance Logistics LLC. However, as of 9:00 AM this morning, the state licensing bureau revoked the registration due to fraudulent financing applications. In fact, the dealership's recovery team is currently in the courthouse parking lot repossessing the vehicle."

Chloe gasped out loud, clutching her designer purse. "They're towing the Range Rover?!"

"Yes, Ms. Mitchell," Denise replied with a slight, cold smile. "I suggest you take public transit home."

Marcus buried his face in his hands, trembling. His entire life—the image of the powerful, wealthy executive, the generous patron, the master of his domain—was crumbling into dust right before his eyes. He turned to look at me, his eyes wide, bloodshot, and filled with tears.

"Eleanor..." he sobbed, his voice cracking. "Please... you can't do this to me. I made a mistake! Chloe meant nothing to me! She was just a distraction! I love you! We built a life together! Remember our vows?"

I looked at him, completely unmoved by his crocodile tears. "You served me divorce papers while I was hooked up to an IV in a hospital bed, Marcus. You told me I couldn't afford to fight you. You tried to throw me out on the street so you could live in my house with your mistress."

"I was stupid! I was confused!" Marcus begged, leaning across the table toward me. "Please, tell your lawyer to stop! We can fix this! I'll break up with Chloe right now! I'll do whatever you want!"

"Marcus, you disgusting coward!" Chloe yelled, standing up from her seat in a rage. She ripped the three-carat diamond ring off her finger and threw it directly at his head. The ring bounced off his shoulder and clattered across the floor. "You useless fraud! Don't you ever come near me again!"

Chloe turned on her high heels and stormed out of the courtroom, the heavy oak doors slamming shut behind her.
