Chapter 4 - The House of Cards Falls

"Your Honor," Denise began, opening her folder, "the petitioner claims sole financial ownership of the marital residence located at 142 Woodbine Estate. However, Mr. Vance does not own the property. In fact, he has never owned it."

"What are you talking about?" Sterling interrupted, rising from his seat. "The deed is in my client's name!"

"Is it, Mr. Sterling?" Denise countered smoothly. She pulled a set of certified land registry documents from her briefcase and handed them to the bailiff to present to the judge. "Two years ago, Mrs. Eleanor Vance purchased the underlying estate and transferred full title into the Vanguard Legacy Revocable Trust, an independent legal entity funded exclusively by Mrs. Vance’s separate earnings. Mr. Vance’s name appears nowhere on the title, the deed, or the trust instrument. The mortgage he claims to pay was paid off in full by Mrs. Vance eighteen months ago."

Judge Higgins examined the documents, her brows furrowing deep into a scowl. "These documents are clear. The property is held entirely within an irrevocable trust structure. Mr. Vance has no equity, no ownership rights, and no legal claim to this estate whatsoever."

"What?!" Chloe shrieked from the gallery, leaning over the wooden railing. "Marcus! You told me that house was worth two million dollars! You said we were moving in next month!"

"Quiet in my courtroom!" Judge Higgins banged her gavel hard.

Marcus turned pale, his jaw dropping as he turned to Sterling. "Richard, do something! That’s impossible! She doesn't have that kind of money! She works a tiny job from home!"

"Speaking of earnings," Denise continued, her voice cutting through the rising panic like a razor, "the petitioner claims Mrs. Vance earns a 'modest income.' For the past three years, Mrs. Eleanor Vance has served as Senior Director of Data Architecture at TechCorp International, earning a documented salary of $130,000 per year, along with stock options valued at over $300,000. She kept her accounts separate. Mr. Vance, on the other hand, earns $85,000 a year—or rather, he did."

Marcus looked as if he had been struck by lightning. His head snapped toward me, his eyes wide with absolute horror and disbelief. "$130,000? You... you made more than me?"

"I did," I said softly, looking him dead in the eye from across the courtroom. "For three years."

"Your Honor, this is irrelevant!" Sterling stuttered, sweating profusely under his collar. "Even if the house is in a trust, my client still has full rights to the shared liquid assets, including the joint accounts and the high-value company vehicles!"

"That brings us to our second point," Denise said, turning to Arthur Pendelton. "We have subpoenaed the forensic bank logs for the joint account. Over the past six months, Mr. Vance has misappropriated over $140,000 from joint funds to purchase gifts, finance trips to Cabo, and lease a 2024 Range Rover for his mistress, Ms. Chloe Mitchell. But more alarmingly..." Denise paused, letting the dramatic silence hang in the air. "...three days ago, Mr. Vance submitted a loan application to First National Bank using a forged signature of Mrs. Vance and a fake property deed to secure a $400,000 equity line."

"That's a lie!" Marcus screamed, slamming his hands on the table as he stood up. "She's setting me up! She's crazy!"

"Sit down, Mr. Vance!" Judge Higgins boomed, pointing a stern finger at him. "Sit down this instant or I will have the bailiff place you in remands for contempt!"

Marcus collapsed back into his chair, his hands trembling violently. Chloe was staring at him in utter horror, her face completely pale. "Marcus... you lied to me? You don't own the house? You don't have millions?"

May you like

"Chloe, babe, shut up for a second, let me think!" Marcus panicked, wiping sweat from his forehead.

"Do not tell me to shut up!" Chloe shrieked, her voice echoing off the walls. "You lied to me! You told me you were a millionaire! You bought my ring with stolen money?!"
