Chapter 8 - Rourke-Wexler Global

With the ghost of my past officially put behind bars, I poured my entire soul into the company. I officially rebranded it to Wexler Global Logistics.
I discovered that while Gavin had been busy playing the role of a celebrity CEO and wining and dining his mistress, the actual infrastructure of the company had been neglected. I spent months traveling to our various fulfillment centers, meeting the truck drivers, warehouse workers, and middle management. I listened to their concerns, raised their wages, and modernized their equipment.
I discovered a natural aptitude for corporate strategy that I had suppressed for years to keep Gavin from feeling threatened. Under my leadership, Wexler Global Logistics grew exponentially. We secured a massive contract with a major federal e-commerce giant, expanding our operations from six states to thirty-two states within eighteen months.
My father watched my trajectory with immense pride. One evening, over dinner at his estate, he raised his glass to me.
"You're a better CEO than I ever was, Clara," he said, his eyes crinkling with warmth. "I always knew you had the strength. I’m just sorry you had to go through hell to find it."
"Don't be sorry, Dad," I replied, clinking my glass against his. "If I hadn't gone through that hell, I wouldn't appreciate the empire I’m building now. Gavin thought he broke me, but he actually just stripped away the only thing holding me back."
During this period of intense growth, I met Julian Vance. Julian was a brilliant, grounded corporate attorney who specialized in international maritime law. He had been brought in to help Wexler Global negotiate a massive shipping expansion into European markets.

Unlike Gavin, Julian was quiet, deeply respectful, and entirely secure in his own skin. He didn't need to be the loudest person in the room to feel important. From our very first meeting, he treated me not just as a powerful executive, but as an equal partner whose mind he genuinely respected.
Our professional relationship slowly blossomed into something deeper. For a long time, I was guarded, terrified of letting another man close to me. But Julian didn't rush me. He showed up with consistency, honesty, and kindness. He was there to support my victories, celebrate my corporate milestones, and cook quiet dinners for me after a grueling fourteen-hour workday.
