Chapter 7 - The Trial of Gavin Rourke

The downfall of Gavin Rourke wasn't just a corporate eviction; it was a total legal annihilation. My father’s legal team, led by Arthur, did not show a shred of mercy. They handed over all the forensic accounting data to the District Attorney's office, along with the security footage of the physical assault.

Within two weeks, Gavin was officially arrested at a cheap, run-down motel on the outskirts of the city. He couldn't afford bail because his personal assets were frozen due to the pending corporate lawsuits against him for embezzlement.

The media, which had once praised him as a "self-made visionary," turned on him instantly. Headlines read: The Fake Billionaire: How Gavin Rourke Stole From His Wife’s Trust to Fund a Luxury Affair.

The divorce proceedings were over in record time. Because of the airtight clauses in the trust documents and the undeniable evidence of domestic abuse, the judge ruled entirely in my favor. Gavin received absolutely nothing from the marriage. In fact, he was ordered to pay back the $1.2 million he had embezzled from the company over the last two years.

I remember the day of his sentencing for the corporate fraud and assault charges. I sat in the front row of the courtroom, flanked by my father.

Gavin looked unrecognizable. He wore an orange jumpsuit, his hair was messy, and the smug, arrogant aura he used to carry was entirely shattered. When the judge sentenced him to five years in a state penitentiary followed by three years of probation, Gavin broke down sobbing, covering his face with his chained hands.

Before he was led away by the bailiffs, he caught my eye. He looked at me with an expression of pure, desperate regret, mouthing the words, "I’m sorry, Clara."

I didn't blink. I didn't smile. I simply looked at him with complete indifference. He was a stranger to me now, a small footnote in the story of my life.

Brielle Knox didn't escape unscathed either. While she wasn't jailed, she was forced to return every single piece of jewelry, luxury clothing, and asset funded by Rourke Logistics. Ruined socially and financially, she fled North Carolina, her reputation completely destroyed in high-society circles.
