Chapter 6 - The Bail Hearing

The county courthouse was packed with reporters when Marcus was brought out in an orange jumpsuit, his hands and feet chained together. The arrogant man who had walked out on his dying wife was nowhere to be seen; in his place was a pale, disheveled man staring desperately around the courtroom for a lifeline.
His sister, Chloe, sat in the second row of the detention box, looking equally ruined.
I sat in the front gallery alongside my mother and Arthur. I was dressed in a sharp, tailored black suit, holding my head high despite the lingering pain from my surgery. Maya was doing well, gaining weight in the hospital, and her strength fed my own.
Marcus’s defense attorney, a overworked lawyer appointed after Marcus’s private legal team resigned due to unpaid retainers, stepped up to the podium.
"Your Honor," the attorney began, "my client is a respected business owner with no prior felony convictions. We request that bail be set at a reasonable amount so he can manage his business affairs and prepare his defense."
The prosecutor stood up immediately.
"Your Honor, the State vehemently opposes bail," the prosecutor said, her voice echoing through the courtroom. "The defendant, Marcus Vance, is charged with attempted murder by depraved indifference, grand larceny, insurance fraud, and forgery. Furthermore, we have clear evidence that Mr. Vance actively attempted to orchestrate the death of his pregnant wife to collect a two-million-dollar life insurance payout."
The courtroom erupted into quiet murmurs. Marcus’s face flushed red, and he leaned over to whisper frantically to his lawyer.
"Your Honor!" Marcus shouted, breaking protocol. "This is a setup! Her mother is a wealthy elitist who has been trying to destroy my marriage for years! She paid for these fake documents! Clara, tell them! Tell them I loved you!"
The judge slammed his gavel down sharply. "Silence in the court! Mr. Vance, one more outburst and I will hold you in contempt!"
The prosecutor continued, placing a stack of evidence photos on the judge's bench. "Your Honor, these are photos of the victim taken by emergency personnel when they arrived at the home. Mrs. Vance was found hemorrhaging on the floor after the defendant stole $23,000 meant for her life-saving delivery and walked out. We have video surveillance of him smiling as he drove away to meet his co-conspirator, Chloe Vance, at a high-stakes gambling house."
The judge reviewed the photos and documents, his expression turning increasingly stern. When he raised his eyes, he directed a look of pure disgust at Marcus.
"Mr. Vance," the judge said, his voice cold as ice. "The evidence presented demonstrates a shocking level of depravity, cruelty, and financial predation. You pose a severe flight risk and an clear danger to society, specifically to your wife and newborn child."
"Your Honor, please!" Marcus begged, his confidence completely shattering.
"Bail is denied," the judge declared, slamming the gavel down. "The defendant will remain in custody pending trial."
As the bailiffs stepped forward to lead Marcus away, his eyes locked onto mine. For the first time, he saw no fear, no doubt, and no devotion in my gaze. He saw only a woman who had survived him.

"Clara!" he yelled as he was dragged toward the side door. "Clara, please! You can't leave me in here! I did it for us! Clara!"
I didn't answer. I didn't even blink. I simply turned my back on him as the heavy iron doors slammed shut.
