Chapter 5 - Unraveling the Web

With Marcus behind bars awaiting his bail hearing, the true extent of his network of lies began to unravel rapidly.

My mother brought in a team of forensic accountants who spent seventy-two continuous hours combing through every document, email, and receipt associated with Marcus’s company, Vance Logistics, as well as his sister Chloe’s personal affairs.

What they uncovered was far grander than a simple gambling addiction.

Chloe wasn't a helpless sister who had fallen into bad habits. She was running an illegal offshore shell company that laundered money for fraudulent real estate operations. Marcus had been funneling money from his own clients into Chloe's company to keep their sinking lifestyle afloat. When his business began facing a federal audit, he realized he was out of options.

That was when he devised the plan targeting me.

"Look at these policy dates, Clara," Arthur said, spreading several documents across the table in my hospital room. "Marcus took out a two-million-dollar supplemental life insurance policy on you six months ago—right around the time your doctor diagnosed your high-risk pregnancy condition."

I looked at the documents. My signature at the bottom was a masterclass in forgery, perfectly copied from my passport.

"He chose a policy with a specific clause," Arthur continued, pointing to a paragraph in fine print. "It pays out double in the event of maternal mortality caused by unattended medical emergencies during labor."

A cold shiver ran down my spine.

He hadn't just abandoned me out of cold indifference. Marcus had actively set a trap. By stealing the $23,000, he ensured I couldn't pay for the scheduled C-section. He knew I was at high risk for a fatal hemorrhage if I went into spontaneous labor without surgical intervention. He had walked out, locked the door, and waited for nature—and my medical condition—to do his dirty work for him.

"He wanted me to bleed to death," I whispered, the horrific reality washing over me. "He calculated it."

"Yes," my mother said, placing a firm, loving hand on my shoulder. "He calculated everything. Except for one detail."

"What detail?"

"He assumed I would never answer your call," Eleanor said, her eyes shining with quiet fierce love. "He spent five years telling you I hated you, telling you I wanted to control your life, making you feel ashamed to reach out to me. He counted on your isolation."

Tears streamed down my face as I looked at my mother. "I'm so sorry, Mom. I believed him. I let him pull me away from you."

"Shh," Eleanor held me tight. "You were manipulated by a predator, Clara. But the isolation ends today. You and Maya will never be alone again."

That evening, the police raided Chloe’s residence.

Armed with the evidence provided by Arthur’s team, the authorities caught Chloe attempting to shred financial documents and package offshore bank drives. She was arrested on charges of grand larceny, racketeering, conspiracy to commit insurance fraud, and accessory to attempted murder.

When the news hit the local media, Marcus’s grand image as a successful, self-made entrepreneur shattered overnight. His clients pulled their contracts, his banks froze his corporate accounts, and his business partners publicly disowned him.

The empire he built on lies was crumbling into ash, piece by piece.
