Chapter 5 - The Tables Turn

The afternoon sunlight streamed through the large hospital windows, illuminating the sterile white walls.

The door unlocked, and federal marshals pushed Derek and Elise into the room.

Gone was the smug arrogance from earlier that morning. Derek looked pale, his expensive suit wrinkled, his hair disheveled. He stared at the two armed military guards standing by the door, then turned his terrified gaze toward me propped up against the pillows with Evelyn sleeping peacefully in my arms.

Elise walked in behind him, her wrists bound in zip-ties, her designer dress stained with spilled coffee. When she saw Director Vance sitting in the corner with a stack of federal warrants, her knees buckled slightly, but she caught herself against the wall.

“What… what is this?” Derek stammered, his voice cracking. “Mara, what’s going on? Why are these men here? Tell them to let me go!”

I didn’t answer immediately. I gently stroked Evelyn’s soft hair, letting the silence stretch until the tension in the room became unbearable.

“You asked me to sign those papers this morning, Derek,” I finally said, my voice calm and measured. “You told me I was unstable, that I couldn't protect my child, that the real world belonged to people who knew how to manipulate the system.”

Derek swallowed hard, looking frantically between me and the federal agents. “We were… we were just trying to secure our future, Mara. It was a joke! A misunderstanding!”

“A misunderstanding?” Director Vance stood up, walking over to Derek and dropping a heavy manila folder onto his chest. “Embezzling twelve million dollars from military family relief funds through shell corporations isn't a misunderstanding, Mr. Voss. It’s federal treason and grand larceny.”

Derek stumbled backward, catching himself against the metal bed rail. “Twelve million? No, that’s impossible… I only—we only diverted—” He stopped abruptly, realizing he had just confessed out loud. He whipped his head around to stare at Elise. “You said her signature would cover everything! You said the military wouldn't investigate a simple domestic dispute!”

Elise glared at him with pure venom. “Shut up, you idiot! You’re the one who managed the books! You’re the one who thought you could outsmart a colonel in military intelligence!”

“That’s enough,” one of the military police officers stepped forward, grabbing Derek by the shoulder and forcing him into a chair.

I looked down at Elise, who was trembling with a mixture of rage and fear.

“You stood in my kitchen, Elise,” I said quietly, my eyes locking onto hers. “You ate at my table. You held my stomach and smiled at my unborn child while actively conspiring with my husband to strip away everything I’ve worked for.”

Elise raised her chin defensively. “You were too distracted by your stupid career to notice what was right in front of you, Mara. You thought you were untouchable because of your rank. But power belongs to those who know how to take it.”

“Power isn't something you steal in the dark, Major,” I replied, my voice carrying the absolute authority of a commanding officer. “Power is what remains when you stand in the ruins of your own destruction and realize you built your life on sand.”

I nodded to Director Vance.

“Take them away.”
