Chapter 4 - The House of Cards

The transition from victim to commander took less than two hours.
While Derek and Elise sat in a high-end downtown café celebrating what they believed was a total victory over mimosas and pastries, federal agents and military police moved simultaneously on two locations: Derek’s financial consulting office and our suburban home.
By noon, my hospital room had been transformed into an impromptu tactical command post.
Two military intelligence officers stood quietly near the window, their laptops open to encrypted secure networks. Director Vance sat in the armchair where Derek had sat earlier that morning, reviewing a thick stack of bank statements, text transcripts, and recorded phone calls.
“The entrapment is complete,” Vance said, looking up at me. “Derek’s signature on the fraudulent financial transfer links him directly to the embezzlement ring we’ve been tracking across three military districts. And Major Carver’s complicity is fully documented through her own operational logs.”
The door opened, and Nora Whitfield walked in carrying a large paper bag smelling of fresh coffee and cinnamon rolls.
“Good afternoon, Colonel,” Nora said brightly, her eyes twinkling with fierce satisfaction. “I brought reinforcements. And I took the liberty of checking your front porch this morning. The city police have already towed Derek’s car, and the locks on your house have been re-keyed—by a real locksmith this time, under direct orders from military command.”
“Thank you, Nora,” I said, smiling for the first time in twenty-four hours. “You’ve been an incredible friend.”
“Nonsense,” Nora waved her hand dismissively, walking over to peek at Evelyn. “Someone had to look out for my favorite neighbor while the rats were trying to sink the ship. Besides, I always knew that husband of yours was about as genuine as a three-dollar bill. The way he looked at you—always measuring, never giving—made me sick.”
Just then, my secure military phone buzzed on the bedside table.
I picked it up. “Report.”
“Target one and target two are in custody, Colonel,” a crisp voice replied through the secure line. “They were intercepted at the downtown café thirty seconds after attempting to access their offshore accounts via mobile encryption. Major Carver is currently being detained by military police, and civilian authorities have cuffed Mr. Voss.”
“Bring them here,” I ordered. “To the hospital.”

“Ma’am?”
“They wanted to stage a theatrical performance in my maternity room this morning,” I said, my voice cold as ice. “It’s only fair that I give them the final act.”
