Chapter 7 - The Collapse of the Empire

The courtroom went dead silent.
Eleanor’s head snapped toward my table, her aristocratic composure shattering instantly. Dr. Thorne turned pale and immediately reached for his briefcase, looking around as if searching for an emergency exit.
Judge Jenkins opened the binder. For ten agonized minutes, the only sound in the room was the crisp turning of pages. The judge’s eyes darted across bank routing numbers, wire transfer receipts, offshore account registries, and side-by-side comparisons of forged medical logs against actual hospital admission timestamps.
"Dr. Thorne," Judge Jenkins said, her voice dropping to a terrifying quiet tone. "Is this your signature authorizing a wire receipt from Aegis Holdings on March 14th of last year?"
"I... Your Honor... I require my attorney present before answering..." Thorne stammered, his face dripping with sweat.
"You are under oath, sir," Judge Jenkins warned. She turned her icy glare toward Eleanor. "Mrs. Vance, care to explain why your private shell company is paying hundreds of thousands of dollars to the doctor currently declaring your daughter-in-law mentally unfit?"
"This is a smear campaign!" Eleanor burst out, breaking her poised facade. "She is a gold-digger! She manipulated my son, she stole corporate documents, and now she's using stolen financial records to destroy our family!"
"Silence!" Judge Jenkins slammed her gavel down with a crack that vibrated through the room. "Mrs. Vance, one more outburst like that and I will hold you in contempt of court immediately!"
Judge Jenkins looked down at Julian, who was cowering behind his legal team, trying to blend into the furniture.
"This court finds that the petition for emergency guardianship was filed in bad faith, supported by fraudulent medical documentation and paid-off expert witnesses," Judge Jenkins announced. "The petition is DENIED with prejudice."
Julian’s lead attorney stood up quickly. "Your Honor, regarding the domestic charges—"
"I am not done," Judge Jenkins interrupted sharply. "Given the evidence of wire fraud, witness tampering, and conspiracy to commit civil fraud presented here today, I am referring these documents directly to the United States Attorney’s Office for immediate federal indictment. Furthermore, I am issuing a permanent, lifetime restraining order against Julian Vance and Eleanor Vance, protecting Clara Vance and her child."
As the judge slammed her gavel down to adjourn, the doors at the back of the courtroom swung open.
Four men in dark suits stepped inside, led by Detective Ramirez and a lead Special Agent from the FBI.
"Eleanor Vance?" the FBI agent announced, pulling a red folder from his coat pocket. "You are under arrest for federal bank fraud, money laundering, and conspiracy to commit tax evasion. Julian Vance, you are being served with additional federal warrants for wire fraud and witness tampering."
Julian lost control completely. He dropped to his knees, sobbing openly, clutching at his mother’s silk skirt. "Mother! Do something! Call the senators! Fix this!"
"Get off me, you coward!" Eleanor shrieked, shoving her own son away as federal agents snapped handcuffs onto her wrists. Her eyes locked onto mine across the aisle—eyes filled with pure, unadulterated venom. "You destroyed us!" she screamed as she was led away. "You were nothing! You were just a pathetic little girl we picked up out of the gutter!"

I stood up from my wheelchair, resting my hand comfortably over my swelling stomach. I looked Eleanor dead in the eye, my voice echoing across the marble room, calm and absolute.
"You didn't pick up a pathetic little girl, Eleanor," I said softly. "You invited an auditor into your house."
