Chapter 3 - The Surgical War and The Arrest

The room exploded into action. Julian thrashing against the guards, cursing, his polished facade completely disintegrating into raw, violent rage. "You little bitch! You think anyone will believe you? My mother will ruin you! You won't get a dime! You'll rot in a psych ward!"

"Get him out of here," the lead officer commanded, snapping handcuffs onto Julian’s wrists with a harsh metallic clack. "Sir, you are under arrest for aggravated domestic assault and battery. You have the right to remain silent..."

As Julian was dragged backward out of the room, his obscenities fading down the hallway, the monitor beside my bed began to emit a rapid, terrifying high-pitched whine.

"Her blood pressure is dropping! 70 over 40!" Nurse Jenkins yelled. "She's going into hemorrhagic shock!"

Dr. Hayes was instantly at my side, his eyes sharp, his hands moving with practiced efficiency. "Internal bleeding is escalating. The liver laceration must have opened further. Prep OR 3 immediately! Call OB/GYN, we need a fetal monitor unit in the operating room right now!"

The ceiling lights began to race overhead as they wheeled my gurney down the tiled corridors. The cold air of the surgical wing hit my skin, but I wasn't afraid. For seven years, I had lived in a cold, dark place inside my own head. This cold was different. This cold was the clean, sterile operating room of survival.

"Clara," Dr. Hayes said, bending over me as an oxygen mask was pressed over my face. "We are going to put you under. We have to repair the bleeding and check the baby. I need you to stay strong."

I reached up, my hand trembling violently, and pulled the locket over my head. I pressed the heavy brass metal into Dr. Hayes’s hand.

"Don't... don't let his mother get it," I whispered into the plastic mask. "The drive... key evidence..."

Dr. Hayes looked at the locket in his hand, then looked at me, his eyes solemn and resolute. He slipped it into his breast pocket. "I give you my word as a physician. It will go directly to the lead detective. Now, sleep, Clara. We’ve got you."

The sweet, heavy scent of the anesthetic flooded my lungs. As the world faded into darkness, the last sound I heard was the steady, rhythmic thump-thump, thump-thump of my baby’s heartbeat on the monitor.

While I lay unconscious on the operating table, a storm was brewing in the city outside.

Julian was booked at the central precinct, but within thirty minutes, the Vance family machinery was activated. Eleanor Vance arrived at the police station dressed in immaculate beige silk, flanked by two senior partners from the city’s most prestigious law firm.

"This is an absolute farce," Eleanor announced to the desk sergeant, her voice carrying the absolute authority of inherited wealth. "My son is a respected businessman and philanthropist. His wife has a documented history of severe mental instability. She threw herself down the stairs in a bid for attention, and this hospital is enabling her slander. Release my son immediately."

The attorneys presented a stack of medical records—forged, altered, or bought from crooked private practitioners—showing that I had been treated for "delusional episodes" and "accidental self-inflicted trauma" over the past three years.

For a moment, the system worked exactly the way the Vance family had always counted on. The police officers, intimidated by the legal firepower and the pristine reputation of the family, began to hesitate. The arresting officer was called into the captain's office.

Then, Dr. Samuel Hayes walked into the precinct lobby, still wearing his surgical scrubs, his face pale with exhaustion, carrying a sealed evidence bag. Inside was the brass locket.
