Chapter 6 - The Gambit at the Table

The formal dining room of the Madison Park estate was bathed in cold morning light. A long mahogany table was spread with thick legal documents, notary seals, and corporate ledgers. Uncle Thomas sat at the head of the table, sipping espresso, looking refreshed and entirely in control. Beside him sat Arthur Pendelton, a high-priced corporate attorney known for making difficult legal problems quietly disappear.
When Claire walked into the room, both men stood up. Pendelton offered a rehearsed, sympathetic smile that made Claire’s skin crawl.
"Claire, my dear," Thomas said smoothly, gesturing to the chair at his right. "Arthur has drafted the emergency filings. We are filing for an immediate temporary restraining order, total freezing of marital accounts, and full transfer of representational authority to me so I can handle Grant's attorneys without bothering you."
Claire walked slowly to the table, her posture straight, her chin lifted. She looked down at the paper where a yellow stick-on tab indicated where she was expected to sign her name.
"Before I sign this, Thomas," Claire said, her voice dead steady, "I have one condition."
Thomas’s smile faltered slightly. His gray eyes narrowed in warning. "Condition? Claire, time is of the essence. Grant's lawyers are preparing their own filings as we speak."
"Last night, before Grant threw me into the rain," Claire lied effortlessly, looking directly into Thomas's eyes, "he said something to me. He said that Apex Sovereign Holdings was already empty. He claimed you had moved all the primary trust assets into overseas entities that I would never see."
Pendelton shifted uncomfortably in his seat, glancing at Thomas. Thomas’s face hardened into stone.
"Grant is a liar and a desperate man, Claire," Thomas said coldly.
"Perhaps," Claire replied smoothly. "But if I am turning over legal authority to you to represent my interests against my husband, I want the full Schedule A asset ledger for Apex Sovereign attached to this document right now. I want to see every property, every stock account, and every wire transfer logged over the last five years before I sign my name."
"That is completely unnecessary for a preliminary restraining order," Pendelton chimed in quickly, trying to smooth over the tension. "Mrs. Mercer, we can provide asset disclosures during the discovery phase of the divorce—"
"No," Claire interrupted, her tone sharp as a razor. "Now. If my uncle has protected my father's legacy as he claims, then showing me the ledger takes three minutes. Unless... Grant was telling the truth?"
The insult hit Thomas exactly where she knew it would—his immense pride. He could not tolerate the insinuation that Grant had outmaneuvered him or that he was afraid to show his work before his own attorney.
"Arthur," Thomas snapped, pulling a leather binder from his briefcase and slapping it onto the table. "Attach the master asset schedule from Apex Sovereign to the addendum. Show her that every single cent is accounted for."
Pendelton hesitated. "Thomas, circulating master ledgers before court filing—"
"Do it!" Thomas commanded, arrogance blinding him to the trap.
Pendelton opened the binder, pulled out the multi-page stamped financial statement detailing the shadow holdings, and attached it to the power of attorney package. He pushed the full stack across the table toward Claire.
"There," Thomas said, leaning back with a cold, triumphant smirk. "Every property, every shell company, every asset accounted for. Now sign."
Claire picked up the full stack of paper—including the official, stamped, notary-verified asset ledger of Apex Sovereign Holdings—and held it in her hands. She looked down at the document that proved a decade of systematic corporate fraud committed by both her husband and her uncle.
Then, she stepped backward, away from the table.
Thomas stood up, his chair scraping loudly against the hardwood floor. "Claire. What are you doing?"
"I'm leaving, Thomas," Claire said softly.
"You're not taking those documents out of this room!" Thomas roared, his calm facade shattering completely. He gestured to the two security guards standing near the dining room entrance. "Block the door! Secure those files!"
The guards stepped forward, but before they could reach her, the grand front doors of the estate slammed open with a deafening bang.
Four armed officers from the King County Sheriff’s Office marched into the grand foyer, led by Evelyn Vance and a court bailiff holding a stamped legal injunction.
"Thomas Bennett!" the lead sheriff announced, his voice echoing through the mansion. "We are executing an emergency protection order issued by the Superior Court of Washington. Stand down immediately!"
Thomas froze. Pendelton turned pale as a ghost, immediately dropping his pen and stepping away from the table.
Evelyn Vance walked past the security guards, who stood frozen under the officers' raised hands. She walked directly up to Claire, offering a warm, triumphant smile.
"You held them, Claire," Evelyn said gently.
"I have the master ledgers," Claire whispered, handing the heavy stack of verified documents to her attorney. "Everything is here. Every offshore account, every property transfer, every wire."
Thomas stared at Evelyn, then at Claire, his face twisting into a mask of pure rage. "You stupid, ungrateful bitch! I built everything you have! You would be nothing without me!"
May you like
Claire turned to look at her uncle—the man who had raised her, lied to her, and used her for twenty years. The fear that had plagued her since childhood was completely gone, replaced by a cold, unwavering strength.
"You didn't build me, Thomas," Claire said, her voice clear and echoing through the grand hall. "You stole from me. And now, I'm taking everything back."
