Chapter 5 - The Pawn's Opening Move

At 6:00 AM, the first pale grey light of dawn broke over the misty tree line of Lake Washington. Inside the guest suite, Claire stood before the bathroom mirror. The swelling on her cheek was a deep purple, and her swollen lip was scabbed over, but her eyes were entirely clear. The frantic panic of the night had vanished, replaced by a quiet, calculating stillness.

She washed her face with cold water, smoothed her hair back, and dressed in a simple navy wool dress that Thomas’s housekeeper had left in the closet for her. She was not going to dress like a broken victim. She was going to look every bit the Bennett heiress they had underestimated.

A gentle knock sounded on the bedroom door. Martha Ellis, the housekeeper from her Bellevue home, stepped inside carrying a tray with fresh coffee and fruit. Seeing Martha here made Claire’s eyes narrow slightly.

"Mr. Thomas had me brought over this morning to care for you, Mrs. Mercer," Martha murmured nervously, refusing to meet Claire's gaze as she placed the tray on the side table.

"How long have you been reporting to my uncle, Martha?" Claire asked, her tone conversational and entirely devoid of anger.

Martha’s hands froze on the tray. She swallowed hard, her eyes darting toward the open hallway.

"I... I don't know what you mean, ma'am."

"Grant didn't hire you eleven years ago, did he?" Claire said softly, stepping closer. "Thomas put you in our house. You were his eyes and ears. Every time Grant brought Vanessa to the house when I was away, you reported it to Thomas, didn't you?"

Martha pulled her hands back, trembling. "Mr. Bennett... he paid off my son's medical debts years ago, Mrs. Mercer. I had no choice. He told me he was protecting you from Mr. Grant."

"And last night? When Grant hit me six times while you stood in the kitchen?"

Tears welled in the older woman's eyes. "I wanted to stop him, I swear it! But Mr. Bennett told me to stay out of it. He said... he said you needed to see who Grant really was."

Claire absorbed the words. Thomas had allowed her to be physically assaulted so she would run into his arms completely shattered and willing to surrender legal control. The sheer, calculating depravity of it made her stomach turn, but she kept her face impassive.

"If you want to repay your debt to me, Martha," Claire whispered, her voice tight and commanding, "I need one thing from you. And if you tell Thomas, I will make sure you spend the rest of your life in prison as an accomplice to wire fraud."

Martha paled, nodding frantically. "Anything. What do you need?"

"I need your phone. Unlocked. Right now."

Martha pulled a simple prepaid smartphone from her apron pocket and pressed it into Claire's hand without hesitation. Claire immediately walked to the bathroom, locked the door, and dialed a number from memory—a number she hadn't called in eight years.

The phone rang three times before a sharp, professional voice answered.

"Vance & Associates. This is Evelyn Vance."

"Evelyn," Claire whispered. "It's Claire. Claire Bennett."

There was a sharp pause on the line. Evelyn Vance had been her late father’s chief corporate counsel before Thomas had ousted her firm following the fatal accident eleven years ago. Evelyn was a legendary forensic attorney in the Pacific Northwest, known for her ferocious courtroom presence and absolute integrity.

"Claire?" Evelyn’s tone shifted from corporate coldness to immediate alertness. "Where are you? I heard whispers late last night that something happened between you and Grant."

"Grant assaulted me last night," Claire said quickly, watching the bathroom door handle. "He threw me out. But Evelyn... Thomas is behind everything. He and Grant have been operating a shadow holding company called Apex Sovereign using my father's trust assets."

"My God," Evelyn breathed. "I suspected Thomas was up to something when he liquidated the original trust structure back in 2015, but I was legally blocked from auditing the estate because you signed the trustee waiver."

"He manipulated me," Claire said. "He’s forcing me to sign power of attorney over to him at 7:00 AM today. His lawyer is coming here. If I sign, he takes full control and freezes Grant out. If I don't sign, he’s threatening to have me committed as mentally unstable."

"Listen to me very carefully, Claire," Evelyn instructed, her voice dropping into an intense, authoritative register. "Do not sign anything. But do not refuse outright either. You need to delay them. Can you pretend to cooperate while asking for a specific clause to be added?"

"What clause?"

"Demand an independent audit of the Apex Sovereign asset schedule before final execution of the power of attorney. Claim that Grant told you the assets were compromised. That will force Thomas to produce the primary ledger documents in front of his attorney. Once those documents are produced on paper in a formal session, they become subject to legal discovery."

"Where do I go once I leave here?" Claire asked.

"I'm sending an armored transport to the edge of the Madison Park estate at 7:30 AM," Evelyn stated. "My team will file an emergency petition for independent guardianship and financial protective status directly with the King County Superior Court at 8:00 AM sharp. Once that filing is logged, neither Thomas nor Grant can touch you or your assets without a judge's direct order."

"Thank you, Evelyn," Claire said, tears of gratitude threatening to overflow.

"Don't thank me yet, Claire," Evelyn replied grimly. "You're going to war against two very powerful, very dangerous men. Hold your ground."

Claire hung up, wiped the search history from Martha’s phone, and handed it back to the housekeeper through the cracked bathroom door. Five minutes later, a heavy knock echoed from the main estate foyer downstairs.

The lawyer had arrived.
