Chapter 6 - The Sister's Reckoning

Vanessa waited for me outside the courthouse steps, holding a three-month-old baby boy wrapped in a faded blue blanket. She looked older, her skin sallow, the glamorous facade she had maintained during her affair with Derek completely stripped away. She looked exactly like what she was: a desperate woman who had gambled her integrity and lost everything.

"Marissa," she called out, stepping into my path as I walked toward Calvin’s waiting car.

I stopped, keeping a safe distance. "What do you want, Vanessa?"

"Look at him," she sobbed, holding the baby out slightly. "His name is Leo. He’s your nephew, Marissa. He didn't do anything wrong. Derek is going to jail, and dad’s trailer has a leaking roof. We don't have money for formula. We don't have anything."

"You had a sister," I said, my voice devoid of warmth. "You had a home where you were always welcome. You had a niece who loved you. You threw all of that away because you wanted my life."

"I was stupid!" she cried, tears streaming down her face. "Derek told me you didn't care about him! He told me the money was his! He lied to me!"

"You knew Holly was dying, Vanessa," I said, stepping closer, my voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "You stood in her hospital room, pregnant with her father's child, and you laughed. Do you have any idea what that does to a mother? To see her own sister smile while her child's life fades?"

"I'm sorry," she whispered, lowering her head. "I'm so sorry."

"I don't care about your apologies," I said. "But I am not like you or Derek. I won't let a baby starve because his parents are monsters."

I pulled a small business card from my purse and handed it to her. It was the contact information for a trust-managed family support program Calvin had set up.

"Every month, a voucher for formula, diapers, and basic medical care will be sent to a designated account," I told her. "The rent on a small apartment will be paid directly to a landlord. You will never see a single dollar of cash, and if you ever try to contact me, Holly, or try to contest our mother's estate again, the funding stops instantly. You will live a quiet, humble life, Vanessa. You will work a real job, and you will raise that boy to be better than his father."

Vanessa clutched the card to her chest, nodding through her tears. "Thank you... thank you, Marissa."

"Don't thank me," I said, turning my back on her. "Thank the fact that I have a heart. Something you and Derek forgot existed."

I got into the back seat of Calvin’s car. He looked at me through the rearview mirror, a proud smile on his face. "You did good, kiddo."

"Let's go home, Calvin," I said. "Back to Boston. Back to Holly."
