Chapter 2 - The House of Cards CollapsesThe silence that followed my phone call was heavy, broken only by the rhythmic beep of Holly’s heart monitor. Derek tried to maintain his arrogant posture, but I could see the subtle shift in his eyes. The smirk was gone, replaced by a defensive scowl.

"Who the hell was that?" Derek demanded, stepping toward me. "Calvin? The old guy who owns the lumber yard? What is he going to do, Marissa? Sue me with a pile of sawdust?"
Vanessa grabbed his arm, her eyes darting between us. "Derek, calm down. It doesn’t matter who she calls. The law is the law. We’re married. Everything we have is shared."
I didn't answer them. I walked past them as if they were ghosts, kneeling by Holly’s bedside. I took her small, cool hand in mine and kissed her forehead. I am going to save you, I whispered in my heart. I am going to clear the weeds out of your garden, my sweet girl.
"Get out," I said aloud, my voice flat and devoid of emotion.
"Marissa, don't be dramatic," Derek scoffed, though he didn't move closer. "We need to talk about the paperwork for the account release. Dr. Patel needs a deposit for the current stay anyway, and if we shift the funds—"
"Get out of this room before I have security drag you out," I turned my head just enough to look him in the eye. "And take your mistress with you."
Vanessa flinched at the word mistress. She had spent the last seven months convincing herself she was the heroine of a tragic romance, saving Derek from a cold, distant wife who cared more about a sick kid than her husband. "I am his family now, Marissa," she hissed. "Look at me! We are having a son. A healthy son. You can't just cast us out."
"Watch me," I said.
Before Derek could speak, the heavy wooden door of the ICU room swung open. Two burly men in hospital security uniforms stepped in, followed by a woman in a sharp grey suit. I recognized her instantly—Eleanor Vance, Calvin Rhodes’ chief legal counsel.
"Mr. and Mrs. Vance—oh, excuse me, Mr. Vance and Ms. Miller," Eleanor said, her voice cutting through the room like a scalpel. "You are requested to leave the premises immediately. Mrs. Marissa Vance has revoked your visitation privileges for this patient."
"You can't do that!" Derek snapped. "I'm her father!"
"Legally, yes," Eleanor replied, pulling a document from her leather briefcase. "But as of ten minutes ago, a temporary restraining order based on financial elder-abuse protocols and child endangerment filings has been initiated by the Rhodes Estate executors. Furthermore, Mr. Vance, your personal credit lines and corporate accounts linked to the Vance-Rhodes logistical partnership have been frozen pending a forensic audit."
Derek’s face drained of color. "What? That’s illegal! I built that logistics branch!"
"You managed a subsidiary owned 100% by a holding company controlled by the late Margaret Rhodes' trust," Eleanor said with a polite, terrifying smile. "A trust that Marissa inherits solely upon her mother's passing, with Calvin Rhodes serving as executor. You have no signature authority without Marissa's co-signing, a detail you seemed to have forgotten when you attempted to wire funds to a private offshore developer last Tuesday."
Derek looked at me, horror dawning on his face. He had thought he was being clever, hiding money for his new life with Vanessa. He hadn't realized that Calvin had been watching every single transaction since the day Holly got sick.
"Marissa," Derek's voice lost its edge, turning into a desperate whine. "Marissa, let's talk about this. We're a family. Holly needs stability."
"Security, please escort them out," I said, never taking my eyes off my daughter.
As the guards grabbed Derek and a crying Vanessa by their arms, leading them into the hallway, Derek yelled back, "You're ruining everything! We have a baby coming! You can't do this to your own sister!"
The doors swung shut. The hallway went quiet.
Eleanor stepped closer, her expression softening. "The transport is arranged, Marissa. Dr. Patel has already signed off on the medical transfer. A private medical jet will be at the airfield by dawn. Holly is going to Boston."

A single tear broke through my defense, tracking through the dust and fatigue on my cheek. "Thank you, Eleanor."
"Don't thank me," she said gently. "Thank your mother. She knew what Derek was before you did. She just waited for you to see it too."
