Chapter 9 - The Promise on the Cliff

That evening, as the sun began to set over the Atlantic, painting the sky in vibrant shades of gold, pink, and deep violet, Vincent led me hand-in-hand up the grassy hill behind the main house, leading to the high ocean cliffs.
The wind was cool and fresh, carrying the salty scent of the sea. Below us, the waves crashed against the rocks in a timeless, soothing rhythm.
At the edge of the cliff stood a simple stone bench, surrounded by a ring of glowing lanterns that had been set up in advance.
"Evelyn told me this was your favorite spot," I said softly, leaning against his arm as we looked out over the endless ocean horizon.
"It was my father's favorite spot," Vincent corrected gently. "He used to sit here when he was overwhelmed by the weight of his responsibilities. But today, it becomes something new."
He turned to face me fully, taking both of my hands in his. The warmth of his touch sent a familiar, exhilarating shiver through my body.
"Twelve years ago, Claire, I was a man dying in the dark, stripped of everything I thought made me powerful," Vincent said, his voice deep, clear, and vibrating with profound emotion. "You came into that darkness like an angel, holding my bleeding hands, praying for a stranger who didn't deserve your grace. You taught me that true power isn't about control, fear, or dominance. True power is the willingness to hold someone when they cannot stand on their own."
He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, navy velvet box. He flipped it open, revealing a breathtaking ring—a flawless, radiant-cut diamond set in a simple band of polished platinum, glowing under the twilight sky.
Vincent dropped to one knee on the soft grass, looking up at me with eyes full of absolute devotion.
"Claire Henderson, you healed my mother, you saved my soul, and you gave me a life worth living. Will you do me the ultimate honor of becoming my wife? Will you stand beside me for the rest of our days?"
I pressed my hand over my mouth, tears flowing freely down my cheeks. The pain of the past, the loneliness of my grief, the years of struggle—all of it vanished, replaced by an overwhelming wave of love and gratitude.
"Yes," I choked out, my voice filled with emotion. "Yes, Vincent! A thousand times yes!"
He slipped the ring onto my finger—a perfect fit—and stood up, pulling me into a fierce, triumphant embrace. He lifted me up and spun me around as the wind carried our laughter out over the vast expanse of the ocean.
When he set me down, he framed my face with his hands and kissed me with a passionate, desperate tenderness that made the whole world disappear around us.

From the terrace below, the faint sound of clapping echoed up the hill. We turned to look and saw Evelyn standing on the patio, leaning on her rosewood cane, clapping joyfully alongside Frank and the rest of the household staff.
Vincent smiled down at me, wrapping his arm around my shoulders, pulling me close against his side. "Welcome home, Claire."
