Chapter 7 - The Reckoning

The next forty-eight hours passed in a blur of intense, surgical precision. Vincent did not leave the estate as a defensive man; he operated as a commander executing a final, decisive campaign.

I watched from the windows as high-level men in suits, city officials, and legal representatives arrived at the estate at all hours of the night. Vincent was dismantling Salvatore Moretti’s network—not through senseless bloodshed on the streets, but through an overwhelming, unstoppable combination of financial crippling, law enforcement exposure, and targeted strategic strikes.

Vincent was cutting off the cancer of his old life, stripping away every illegal entanglement to ensure that the Mercer name—and everyone under its protection—would forever be untouchable by the law and safe from rivals.

On the third evening, the estate returned to a profound, surreal silence. The extra guards had vanished from the hallways. The heavy tension that had hung over the property for weeks dissipated like fog under the morning sun.

I was sitting in the quiet library, reading a book by the fireplace, when Vincent walked in.

He looked exhausted, but his posture was lighter, as if a mountain had been lifted off his broad shoulders. He had showered and changed into a simple black cashmere sweater and dark trousers. He looked less like a syndicate boss and more like the man I had come to love—a man seeking peace.

He walked over to my chair and knelt beside it, placing his hands over mine resting on the book.

"It's over," he said quietly.

I looked down at him, my heart swelling. "Is Moretti...?"

"Moretti and his key lieutenants were arrested two hours ago by federal authorities," Vincent explained, his voice calm and steady. "The evidence provided to the Justice Department was overwhelming and undeniable. He will spend the rest of his natural life in a maximum-security facility. The remaining assets of his organization have been completely dismantled."

I breathed out a long, trembling sigh of relief. "And you, Vincent? Are you safe?"

Vincent reached into his pocket and pulled out a thick, official document, laying it on my lap. It was a signed agreement transferring all Mercer holdings into legitimate, publicly traded logistics, real estate, and shipping corporations, overseen by a blind trust and federal compliance officers.

"I spent twelve years building a fortress to survive," Vincent said, looking directly into my eyes. "And I spent the last forty-eight hours making sure that fortress was entirely clean. I am out, Claire. Completely out. My mother is safe. My people are protected. And I am a free man."

Tears pricked the corners of my eyes. I reached out, tracing the sharp line of his jawline. "You did all of this..."

"I did it because twelve years ago, a miracle saved my life in a dark chapel," Vincent said softly, his voice trembling with rare, unscripted emotion. "And two months ago, that same miracle walked back into my home and taught me how to live again. I could not offer you a life built on shadows, Claire. You deserve the light."

He stood up and gently pulled me up with him, wrapping his strong arms around my waist, pulling me so close that there wasn't a breath of air between us.

"I love you, Claire," he whispered against my lips. "I have loved the ghost of you for twelve years, and I love the woman standing before me with every fiber of my soul."

May you like

"I love you too, Vincent," I sobbed happily, standing on my tiptoes to press my lips against his.

The kiss was sweet, deep, and filled with the promise of a future no longer haunted by fear or grief.
