Chapter 7 - The Shadows Fall

As the handcuffs clicked around Melissa’s wrists, the illusion of her control shattered completely. Detective Miller escorted her out to a waiting police cruiser, her screams of fury echoing down the quiet suburban street, muffled only by the falling snow.
Mark sat at the dining room table, surrounded by police officers collecting evidence. He looked small, defeated, and utterly stripped of any dignity he had left.
Detective Miller returned upstairs with a forensics officer to open the floor safe Mark had disclosed. Inside, exactly as Mark had said, was a small steel box containing Sarah’s original journals, financial logs showing millions diverted into foreign accounts, and a black flash drive labeled with Ethan’s name.
That evening, Arthur, Detective Miller, and I sat in a conference room at the police station as the forensic team accessed the contents of the flash drive.
On it was a series of video files recorded by Sarah in the final weeks of her life. When the video played, Sarah’s pale, exhausted face appeared on the screen. Ethan had inherited her warm hazel eyes and gentle smile. Seeing her brought a wave of grief so sharp it caught in my throat.
“If you are watching this,” Sarah’s recorded voice spoke softly from the speakers, “it means I am no longer here, and my suspicions were correct. Melissa has been systematically poisoning my medication with digitalis compounds to mimic a heart failure. I have hidden samples of my blood in a secure safety deposit box at First National Bank, along with full documentation of her embezzlement.”
Sarah looked directly into the camera, tears glistening in her eyes. “Mark is too afraid of confrontation to stand up to her. He thinks he can keep the peace, but Melissa will never stop. Linda... if you are watching this, please take Ethan. Keep him safe. Protect my boy.”
The recording ended. The room was silent.

Detective Miller closed his laptop. “This is a clear-cut case of premeditated murder, grand theft, and child abuse. We have more than enough for a non-bailable indictment for Melissa. As for Mark... his compliance and failure to protect his son make him an accessory after the fact.”
I sat back in my chair, feeling an overwhelming weight lift from my shoulders, replaced by a quiet, fierce resolve. Sarah had fought for her son until her very last breath, and now it was my turn to finish what she started.
