Chapter 10 - The Warmth of a New Christmas

One year later.
Christmas Eve had arrived again. Outside, a gentle snowfall was dusting the pine trees in the backyard, coating the world in a soft, peaceful white blanket. But inside my cottage, the living room was filled with warmth, light, and the sweet scent of fresh cinnamon and pine.
A massive Christmas tree stood in the corner, adorned with colorful lights, handmade ornaments, and a bright silver star at the very top. Underneath it was a mountain of wrapped presents— vibrant boxes with big red bows, waiting for the morning.
Ethan, now twelve years old, stood by the living room window. He was wearing thick woolen socks, cozy pajama pants, and a warm red sweater. He wasn't looking out the window with fear or sorrow; he was watching the snow fall with a bright, genuine smile.
“Grandma, come look!” he called out, waving his hand toward me. “The snow is getting really thick!”
I walked over, carrying two mugs of hot chocolate topped with extra marshmallows, and handed one to him. “It’s going to be a white Christmas, Ethan.”
He took a sip of the hot cocoa, blowing softly on the steam. Then he looked at me, his hazel eyes clear and filled with peace.
“Grandma?”
“Yes, sweetie?”
“Thank you for dropping your groceries last year.”
I smiled softly, pulling him into a tight, warm side-hug. “I’d drop a thousand grocery bags for you, Ethan.”

He leaned his head against my shoulder, holding his warm mug with both hands. There were no secrets left in the shadows, no ledgers of cruelty, and no doors locked against the cold. The dark chapter of our lives had closed forever, replaced by the enduring warmth of a love that could never be broken.
Together, we stood by the window, safe and secure inside our home, watching the winter night bloom with the quiet beauty of a brand-new beginning.
