Chapter 4 - The House of Cards

Three weeks passed in a blur of depositions, medical recoveries, and federal grand jury testimonies.
From my hospital room, and later from a secure safe house provided by the FBI, I watched the Blackwood empire crumble like a sandcastle hit by a tidal wave.
Marcus was with me through almost all of it. He brought me files, coordinated with my legal team to tear up the fraudulent power-of-attorney documents Evelyn had tricked me into signing, and made sure I had access to the best endocrinologists in the country. What started as a high-stakes rescue mission had slowly shifted into something quiet, steady, and deeply comforting.
One afternoon, Marcus walked into the safe house living room carrying a thick stack of legal briefs and a takeout box of spicy noodles.
"It's over," he said, setting the papers on the coffee table.
I looked up from my laptop, where I was reviewing the reinstated intellectual property rights for my medical tech startup. "All of it?"
"All of it," Marcus nodded, sitting down across from me and opening the food container. "The federal indictment against Evelyn includes financial fraud, racketeering, and attempted premeditated murder. The prosecution has the amber vial, the chemical analysis of the wine, and testimonies from three former caterers she bribed to look the other way in past incidents."
I felt a cold shiver run down my spine, mixed with an overwhelming sense of profound relief. "Past incidents?"
"Let's just say this wasn't her first time eliminating someone who inconvenienced the family legacy," Marcus said grimly. "Grant is cooperating with the feds now, trying to save his own skin by turning over his mother's secondary offshore accounts. As for Chloe... her marriage to Julian was annulled before they even left for their honeymoon. Julian’s legal team distanced themselves from the family name within twenty-four hours of the arrest."
I let out a long breath, resting my head against the back of the sofa. "It feels surreal. Three weeks ago, I thought my life was ending on the marble floor of Bellefleur Manor."
"Your life was just beginning," Marcus corrected softly, setting his chopsticks down. He looked at me across the small table, his gray eyes holding an intensity that made my breath catch. "Elena... when I caught you at that wedding, and I smelled the synthetic insulin mixed with potassium in that glass... something inside me shifted. I’ve seen a lot of corruption in my line of work. I’ve seen people do ruthless things for money. But watching a woman try to murder someone for simply needing medical care... and watching everyone else stand by and watch... it broke something."
My heart skipped a beat. "Marcus..."
"I know my timing is terrible," he said with a faint, self-deprecating smile, leaning forward. "I'm an FBI agent with a chaotic life, and you're rebuilding your entire world. But I couldn't walk away then, and I certainly have no intention of walking away now. Unless, of course, you want me to leave."
I reached across the table, my fingers brushing against his warm hand. The continuous glucose monitor on my arm hummed a steady, perfect 110.

"Agent Vance," I said, a genuine smile breaking across my face for the first time in years. "If you think you can walk away from me after bringing me spicy noodles and taking down a criminal syndicate, you clearly don't know my medical stubbornness."
Marcus chuckled, his hand turning over to clasp mine firmly. "Noted. I'll make sure to bring backup next time."
