Chapter 2 - The Mask Slips

The silence that fell over the Bellefleur Manor ballroom was absolute. The string quartet in the loft had stopped playing mid-chord, their bows hovering in frozen shock over violin strings. Three hundred guests—captains of industry, politicians, and socialites—stood paralyzed, their champagne flutes half-raised to their lips.

Evelyn Thorne-Blackwood’s flawless, surgically maintained face twitched. For the first time in thirty years, the impenetrable armor of her untouchable social status fractured.

"This is a private family matter," Evelyn recovered enough to hiss, her voice sharp as glass shards. She stepped forward, smoothing the emerald silk of her designer gown. "A bitter, unstable girl trying to ruin my daughter’s wedding day. Security, remove this... this impostor from the catering staff immediately."

The man holding the evidence bag didn't flinch. He remained kneeling beside me on the marble floor, his thumb pressed steadily against my wrist, monitoring my plummeting pulse.

With his free hand, he flipped open the black leather folder containing his badge. The gold emblem of the Federal Bureau of Investigation caught the sharp light of the crystal chandeliers.

"Special Agent Marcus Vance, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Cyber Crimes and Financial Division," he announced, his voice carrying effortlessly across the cavernous room. He looked up, locking his piercing gray eyes onto Evelyn. "And this is not a family matter, Mrs. Thorne-Blackwood. This is an attempted homicide investigation."

A collective gasp sucked the oxygen right out of the room.

Grant pushed through the wall of stunned bridesmaids, his face pale and eyes wide with panic. "Wait—there’s been a mistake. Marcus? What are you—what are you doing here? You’re supposed to be—" Grant stopped dead, his mouth slightly open as he looked down at me.

Marcus turned his head slowly, fixing Grant with a look of pure, unadulterated contempt. "I’m supposed to be catering? No, Grant. I’m supposed to be ensuring that corporate criminals don’t slip federal witnesses lethal doses of synthetic insulin and potassium chloride in a glass of pinot noir."

My vision was blurring, the edges of the grand ballroom tunneling into darkness. I could feel my body shutting down, the toxic concoction Evelyn had forced down my throat accelerating the diabetic crash. But through the fog, I heard Grant’s voice crack.

"Synthetic... what? Mom, what did you do?"

"Nothing!" Evelyn shrieked, her composure finally shattering completely. She pointed a trembling, diamond-ringed finger at Marcus. "He’s lying! He’s an accomplice to her schemes! Look at her—she’s a parasite who latched onto my son for his trust fund! She faked her entire medical history!"

"Mrs. Thorne-Blackwood," Marcus said smoothly, standing up to his full, imposing height. He signaled to the doors. "Step away from the amber vial on the floor. Do not touch it. State Troopers and local paramedics are already breaching the perimeter. Nobody leaves this room."

Chloe finally broke her silence, dropping her bridal bouquet. The white lilies scattered across the marble like fallen snow. "Mom... tell me he's lying. Tell me you didn't..."

Evelyn grabbed Chloe’s arm with a desperate grip, her fingernails digging through the expensive silk of the wedding dress. "Chloe, listen to me, you need to call our legal team immediately—"

Sirens began to wail outside, growing louder by the second, tearing through the pristine, wealthy silence of the estate.

Marcus knelt back down beside me, slipping a cold hand behind my neck to support my head. "Stay with me, Elena," he whispered urgently, his voice dropping its official hardness and turning fiercely gentle. "Look at me. You're going to make it."

My eyelids fluttered, the darkness pulling me under, but the last thing I saw before I lost consciousness was Grant staring at his mother in absolute horror, finally realizing the monster he had called family.
